On Day 2 of this CICF Expo, I cosplayed Patchouli from Touhou Project. Preparing for this look demanded considerable care. In canon lore, Patchouli is the unmoving Great Library witch—frail in health and rarely stepping outdoors—so across the makeup and overall presence, I intentionally leaned toward an intellectual, delicate, yet richly ornate aesthetic.
First, regarding the hair and makeup styling: to faithfully embody the character, I chose a medium-long straight purple wig trimmed with blunt bangs, paired with purple colored contacts. The eye makeup emphasized the lower lash lines and blush, striving to evoke that pallid complexion with faint flushed undertones typical of someone cloistered away inside a library. For the lips, a soft peachy-pink matte lip glaze kept the facial palette balanced. The defining facial accent was the chain-draped rimless metallic glasses; delicate chains adorned with pearls and teardrop crystals cascaded from both temples, swaying gently with every step to evoke a wonderful sense of atmosphere.
The wardrobe was the centerpiece of this ensemble. Styled as a Lolita style cosplay gown, the overarching palette united white, soft lavender, and muted brown. The oversized white lace bonnet atop my head was an absolute showstopper, composed of multi-tiered wave pleats of white tulle and scalloped lace trims, accented on the sides with blue ribbons and woven lace. To ensure the bonnet would stay upright throughout a full convention day, I stuffed interior supports and adjusted its silhouette repeatedly to achieve its crisp dimensional flare. The dress abounded in lace, ruffled flounces, and ribbon bows—with the collar and bodice adorned with light blue and soft brown satin ribbons, complemented by pearlescent puff sleeves. The long strands of pearl necklaces draped around my neck further anchored Patchouli's vintage, aristocratic bookish aura.
This outing was spent living our Anime convention daily life alongside my friends. The CICF Expo halls were vast and teeming with crowds. While traversing the floor in such a layered, heavy gown all day was physically demanding, the on-site energy was phenomenal. The second photo was taken right within the bustling hall, framing passing attendees and fellow cosplayers in the backdrop to capture authentic convention realism. Hearing fellow fans smile and call out 'Mukyu!' as they passed brought that heartwarming, unspoken connection unique to conventions.
When it comes to cosplay, I have always believed that tailoring and prop details dictate the fidelity of the recreation. With an element-heavy character like Patchouli, the wig, contacts, makeup, lace trims, and accessories must harmoniously coalesce. During the shoot, I noticed the rimless glasses and dangling chains cast distinct lusters under shifting lights, which, paired with the cascading purple locks, perfectly channeled her magical scholarship. Although bringing such an elaborate design to life tests one's endurance, standing fully costumed in the hall and connecting with friends who cherish the same universe makes every hour of preparation worthwhile. I look forward to unlocking more intricate looks with my group ahead, continuing to savor these focused and fulfilling moments on the convention circuit.
