The black-and-white contrast of the MadoHomu pairing has always been a photographic direction I deeply wanted to explore. In this photoshoot between Qi Yu and Ye Yu, a dreamy space constructed with wisteria blossoms and picture frames brought the tender, lingering bond between Akemi Homura cosplay and Madoka Kaname cosplay in Puella Magi Madoka Magica to life.
In preparing the costumes, we deliberately amplified the color contrast between the two characters. For the Akemi Homura look I portrayed, I chose a black corseted strapless dress adorned with intricate lace details and a black bow tie at the neck. To emphasize the character's aloof and fragile aura, I specifically styled it with long over-the-elbow black gloves and Black fishnet stockings with cutout elements. The red ribbon headband was the crowning touch in the all-black ensemble, popping vividly against the purple-toned set. Meanwhile, my partner portraying Madoka Kaname wore an exceptionally delicate white Lolita-style dress featuring cascading ruffles, an exquisite lace overlay, pink twin tails, and white bow hair accessories, perfectly accentuating her pure, gentle presence. Under the soft purple lighting, this stark black-and-white contrast felt completely harmonious rather than disconnected, elevating each other beautifully.
Setting up the studio scene also took considerable thought. Using white Roman pillars, vintage wooden frames, expansive faux wisteria blooms, and fabric vines, we framed a space reminiscent of a secret garden. Those cascading purple floral clusters under softly diffused lighting cultivated a hazy, wonderland-like atmosphere. During the shoot, we explored multiple interactive poses to fit the emotional theme of "bound by the red string between you and me."
For instance, in the cover seated shot, the two characters lean against each other on the rug, where Black fishnet stockings and the voluminous white skirt create a striking visual impact. I love this relaxed yet tension-filled composition, which skillfully captured the leg contours and the skirt's rich layers. In another crouching shot framed with the picture frame in the foreground, our hands overlap and black-and-white gloves intertwine, perfectly conveying that yearning to draw close entangled with a sense of fated struggle. What satisfied me most was the shot where I relaxed with my eyes closed—embraced from behind by the pink-haired character, I closed my eyes to savor the peaceful serenity of being protected, which, paired with the drooping vines, created an exceptionally quiet and moving atmosphere.
The visual language this time avoided forced, complex poses, focusing instead on the natural flow of chemistry between the two. "The red string binds you and me; let us never part, stay by my side"—this line constantly echoed in our minds during the shoot. Black and white, light and darkness, are inherently the most captivating traits of this MadoHomu pairing.
To achieve our ideal visual outcome, we utilized extensive softboxes and reflectors to soften shadows, highlighting skin texture and the sheen of the wigs and lace. From capturing their inner spirit to costume tailoring and delicate set design, it was not merely completing a photoshoot, but an intimate experience connecting with the characters' souls. Qi Yu and Ye Yu exhibited tremendous synergy on set, with seamless eye contact and fluid transitions in every movement, allowing the photographer to capture numerous vivid moments. We hope everyone can feel the profound bond we wished to convey through these photos—not just the aesthetic beauty, but the unbreakable, deep devotion between the characters.
