This set of Chinese style Puella Magi Madoka Magica convention photos was taken previously at the World Line Anime Convention—I almost missed out on these photos delivered by photographer Hei Quan Mo. Because these were convention floor shots, the lighting conditions were complex and background crowds were dense; thus, we primarily relied on telephoto lenses to close the distance, using depth-of-field compression to filter out chaotic background elements. The Chinese style costume details were quite intricate: a pink qipao-cut top with frog buttons, crisscrossed chest lacing, white puff sleeves, and a midriff-baring waist, paired with a patterned pink skirt layered with multi-tiered white ruffles. With abundant fabric in the skirt, maintaining its placement while moving required constant attention. The hand-held drum prop was prepared in advance, with yellow borders and white faces, serving as an ideal focal point for half-body framing or face-framing poses.
To find clean backgrounds, we paced alongside the venue's side glass railings, hunting for backlight or side-backlight angles. Side-backlighting gave the pink short wig translucent edges while adding textural depth to the white gloves and socks. The single-leg stance in the full-body shots showcased the skirt flow and leg lines, harmonized by the red-and-white shoes and socks. Prop angles and eyelines were calibrated through test shots. Navigating the dense crowd required great care to protect the props and skirt hem. Touching up makeup took effort to keep hair and cosmetics pristine under midday heat, featuring cool, soft tones that complemented the light pink hair.
For the duo shots, collaborating with Akemi Homura required strong synergy; she wore a purple Chinese dress with purple-blue hair ribbons. We explored back-hugs and face-to-face compositions, keeping deliberate spacing so the photographer could capture our intersecting gazes. Merging two high-contrast palettes was challenging, but the photographer unified the tones with cool, translucent post-processing while preserving fabric textures under light. Controlling hand tension when holding the drum avoided awkward glove creasing. De-saturating the vivid pink-purple pairing created a softer, more timeless look. The single-leg balance took several takes to achieve proper equilibrium. Capturing the authentic convention energy despite spatial limits delivered great results, thanks to seamless teamwork, patient photography, and effective lens positioning to eliminate clutter.
