This time, my partner and I shot a series of Cosplay event photos from the Sword Art Online UW arc: I took on Asuna the Creation Goddess Stacia (Asuna cosplay), while she cosplayed Sinon the Sun Goddess Solus (Sinon cosplay). The design directions of our outfits are vastly different—my side features a pink-and-white flowing gown paired with white armor plates and massive wings in the back, creating an overall aesthetic that is soft yet combat-sharp. My partner's Sun Goddess look boasts blue-and-white battle regalia with heavy weaponry, whose rugged metallic texture harmonized impeccably with the industrial-style venue. To achieve the best visual results, we spent hours obsessing over the details of costumes and props: for instance, Asuna's pink skirt hem required wire boning to prop up its voluminous silhouette, and the breastplate and pauldrons were hand-painted and weathered to provide richer three-dimensional depth under the lights. The weapon Sinon carried, complete with its golden ring structure, also took immense dedication—its authentic heft genuinely made arms ache after shooting for a while.
For the shooting location, we selected an indoor venue boasting expansive glass windows and exposed steel-beam architecture. This environment naturally lent a cool color tone, perfectly anchoring the vibrant pink gown to create striking chromatic contrast. In terms of photographic lighting, the primary rim light was cast from the back quarter to outline our contours; the backlighting effect washed a faint, ethereal halo across the strands of hair and feather edges. In pose design, because I was Asuna, I needed to wield the longsword executing levitation and offensive strikes, while Sinon crouched poised on the ground readying her arms. A low-angle upward perspective served as our primary angle for this shoot, as this vantage point fully accentuated the draping drape of the skirt, leg contours, and every detail of the White stockings and tall boots.
The trickiest part of the shoot was managing the feather effects and light motes. To capture the precise moment of falling feathers, we tossed them repeatedly while the photographer snapped continuous bursts, which, combined with particle effects in post-production, conjured that magical, high-fantasy presence in the frame. These two character incarnations from Sword Art Online UW are exceptionally distinctive, and expressing the clash of auras between the Creation Goddess and Sun Goddess was our key focus. My partner and I spent considerable time refining our blocking, stances, and eye contact, ensuring both faces conveyed storytelling depth within the same frame. From test makeup and donning cumbersome armor and wings, to constantly repositioning stances on set, right down to grading the light in post, no single step was easy. Although the props were heavy and the garments stiflingly warm, seeing the finished cuts on screen wiped away all exhaustion in an instant. This set of Cosplay event photos ventured beyond conventional convention photography styles, hoping to convey the grand epic weight of the UW arc through the lens. In makeup, to evoke the divinity of the Creation Goddess, warm eye tones were chosen alongside a commanding lip shade. Sinon's blue hair under the venue's cool ambient lighting looked wonderfully crisp. Throughout breaks, we checked each other's wigs and armor alignment to ensure every shutter click captured our prime condition. Wearing the entire costume was intricate—especially the rear wings, which required fine-tuning the center of gravity to stand stably. Lighting shifted quickly across the venue, so camera settings were continuously calibrated to sculpt dimensional depth using architectural shadows and highlights.
