[Liv Cosplay] Dark Gothic Style Photoshoot in Punishing: Gray Raven

This Dark style Gothic photoshoot had been in the planning stages for quite some time. I served as the model, while the photography and set design were carefully adjusted together in the studio.

For the hair, I chose long straight silver-white hair with thinned bangs to emphasize a lightweight feel. The makeup was kept clean and natural, intentionally tone-down on eyeshadow colors to focus on a flawless base and lip color. Combined with light-colored contact lenses, my overall facial spirit aligned closely with the character's original cold yet slightly languid temperament.

In terms of costume structure, to create depth, the neckline incorporated a mandarin collar design with a white trim overlay, making the black-and-white contrast the first visual focal point near the neck. The cuffs featured an off-the-shoulder cut paired with ruffled sleeves made of semi-transparent lace, maintaining a gorgeous aesthetic without appearing overly bulky. The waistline was fitted with a narrow cinch, complemented by two hard, spike-like ornaments with a subtle cyan-green gradient on the sides, extending the waistline visually.

The skirt volume was quite large, utilizing an irregular multi-layered design. The outer black fabric was stiff, while the inner lining was spliced with a white base. This design offered many advantages—for instance, when sitting, crouching, or reclining, the skirt naturally unfurled like a dark flower. However, the drawback was also clear: slight movements caused the fabric to wrinkle or bunch together, requiring dedicated time to smooth it out before every posture change.

When arranging specific poses, we experimented with three distinct visual focal points. In the first shot, I covered my collarbone and chest with one hand while reaching the other toward the camera—a clever interactive perspective composition that highlighted the tension in my upper body and sleeves. However, as a half-body close-up, its display scope was somewhat limited. In the second shot, I turned my body sideways and looked back over my shoulder into the lens. This pose heavily tested the flexibility of my shoulder blades and neck, as the collarbone area needed to be pressed downward so the off-shoulder suit collar structure wouldn't look like the outfit was awkwardly hanging.

The third shot was our main featured composition. I sank completely relaxed into a weathered brown leather sofa, elevating my legs in the air while wearing black thin-strap high-heeled sandals. When shooting such full-body shots, the instep must be pointed straight in an inclined line to ensure the leg extension from calf to thigh remains in optimal shape. Resting my chin on my hand with a slightly unfocused gaze, there was no need to stare directly at the lens. Compared to the first two compositions that carried a sense of outward interaction, this completely open posture brought out a touch of effortless elegance and composure.

Setting up the scene took quite a lot of back-and-forth effort. The background consisted of Gothic arches and crosses constructed from dark gray backdrop panels with a deliberately rough texture. For foreground props, we gathered various materials, including dark roses, vintage wooden trunks, golden empty picture frames, dusty iron candlesticks, as well as iron chains and white candles scattered across the floor. A red cloth was spread on the ground, creating a powerful complementary color contrast with its vivid purity against the cool gray background and black attire.

For lighting in this studio photoshoot, we used a single light paired with a reflector. Hard side-lighting sliced in, giving the black fabric of the outfit reflective surfaces so it wouldn't look completely flat and washed out in blackness. In post-processing, the overall color saturation was lowered to maintain a dark undertone, while preserving the vibrant red of the roses and the cool elegance of the small cyan ornament on the headpiece. Although as a photography newcomer it took a long time to hone the composition, the overall atmospheric feel achieved our intended vision for this Liv cosplay set from Punishing: Gray Raven.
