When shooting the Reverse: 1999 Island Group theme this time, setting the scene by the seaside allowed us to genuinely experience the profound atmosphere of Greek tragedy firsthand.
From the initial concepts of composition and layout, our goal was to portray that irresistible sense of fatalism, like the opposing ends of a number line. The character I portrayed was 210 cosplay; standing in the ocean between my blue-haired and red-haired companions (37 cosplay, 6 cosplay, and Sophia cosplay), I could truly feel the immense weight of the phrase: 'Fate knows our destiny far better than we do.'
The entire shoot was packed with challenges. First and foremost was the wardrobe: because all the outfits were lightweight, ancient Greek-style flowing robes, once we stepped into the sea they became thoroughly soaked, clinging coldly to our skin and making movement difficult. To capture compositions and lighting like in photo 4, our group ran back and forth across the beach multiple times. The coastal wind was fierce, frequently tangling hair and wigs while the flowing fabric ribbons entwined, creating considerable chaos on set. Fortunately, our photographer, SeaCat, demonstrated exceptional professionalism in mastering light and composition, flawlessly capturing that sacred yet tragic aura bathed in sunlight.
Regarding the silhouette and physical presentation: because the gowns are somewhat sheer with high slit cuts, the backlighting beautifully delineated leg contours. This was chosen deliberately to resonate with the authentic ethos of a Dithyramb—ecstatic, delirious, and subtly hallucinatory. The chill of the ocean water combined with beads of sweat on our faces helped us step into the emotional states of the characters even more organically.
I also took charge of the post-production typography and layout myself. The text drew inspiration from dithyrambic hymns and meditations on rationality, weaving in mathematical concepts and symbolic motifs. Extensive care went into crafting the double-exposure effects in photos 5 and 10, superimposing water ripples over faces to convey the inner frenzy, fragmentation, and psychological tension of the characters. Shooting this set took nearly an entire day. Huge thanks to the three wonderful partners who endured the freezing water while maintaining rigorous facial expression control throughout. It was undoubtedly an immensely demanding yet visually magnificent cosplay experience.
