For this Anran cosplay photoshoot, the core focus was entirely on Pose reference. Anran's costume carries a strong combat aesthetic and modern mecha Anime cosplay style; with waist cutouts, a mini skirt hem, and gold metallic armor, putting it on completely transforms one's posture, but it inevitably brings restrictions to posing. To faithfully recreate that crisp, aggressive combat posture from the concept art, I practiced shifting my center of gravity against Pose reference guides for hours prior to the shoot. For instance, in the shot where I kneel on one knee raising the shield, it looks effortless, but because the skirt slit is quite high, crouching required tightening both my thighs and core simultaneously; letting up even a little would look slouched and rob the character of her vital sense of power.
The shooting location that day was a cabin compartment imbued with sci-fi elements, where the cool blue-and-white ambient lighting created a fantastic visual clash with the orange, black, and gold palette of the costume. I also invested a lot of effort into hair and makeup: to align my facial silhouette with the character's contours, I deliberately teased the top of the wig for volume, repeatedly adjusted the face-framing strands with setting spray, and paired upturned eyeliner with red contact lenses, largely achieving a balance between the 2D Anime cosplay look and real-life texture. The red tassel earrings swayed slightly whenever the photographer pressed the shutter; this tiny detail added dynamic tension to the still frames.
Regarding props, the red-and-gold disc weapon was the centerpiece of the entire cosplay. It is far from lightweight; raising it one-handed while posing placed heavy demands on shoulder and back strength. The photographer utilized numerous low-angle upward shots and wide-angle lenses to amplify the overall visual impact. I experimented with various Pose reference stances—crouching, side-sitting, and glancing back while holding the shield—aiming to capture her presence from diverse angles. The black strapped armor paired with metallic shin guards accentuated the muscular definition of my legs when crouching, which, combined with the texture of Black stockings, visually added a touch of battle-hardened allure.
Many might think cosplay is just wearing costumes and taking pictures, but bringing a three-dimensional character to life relies heavily on Pose reference and facial expression management. Transforming into the character before the lens requires calculating every point of physical exertion. For example, I asked the photographer to explore different camera setups—shooting upward from a low angle to elongate leg lines or capturing the metallic gleam of the weapon from the side. Wearing this armor and standing inside that environment, the dynamic tension of the poses emerged naturally.
