[Sankarea: Undying Love Cosplay] Japanese School Style Photoshoot in Guangdong's Hydrangea Sea

The location for this outdoor photoshoot was chosen at Dongguan Xiangyu Baihuayuan. I didn't expect to encounter such a large area of hydrangea sea in Guangdong, which perfectly fits the cold yet vital temperament of the character from Sankarea: Undying Love. This experience of flower photography in Dongguan was wonderful.

Regarding the costume, I chose a classic modified Japanese sailor uniform with a white shirt paired with a purple collar and pleated skirt, a blue bowknot tied on the chest, and matching blue flower hair accessories, creating an intentional color echo with the blue-purple Endless Summer hydrangea sea. To present the character's slightly ethereal feel, the wig was specially chosen with a smooth-textured black long straight style. Meanwhile, I wore red colored contact lenses, combined with a relatively transparent base makeup, making the overall makeup look as close as possible to the state in graphic works.

The shooting weather that day was actually not perfect; early summer in Guangdong is very muggy, and because the hydrangea bushes are dense, standing inside makes the perceived temperature very high, making it easy to sweat. Fortunately, before the shoot, we prepared a transparent long-handled umbrella as a prop. Besides echoing that rainy season atmosphere, it also served as temporary shade on-site. To present an atmosphere as close to natural light but transparent as possible, the photographer ChenguangStar and I repeatedly communicated about the direction of capturing the light.

This set of photos was roughly divided into several scenes: The first set is a sitting pose on a white hollow iron bench, holding the umbrella or tilting the head up with eyes closed to let the body relax naturally, utilizing a large aperture to blur out the foreground and background flower leaves to create a sense of serenity deep within the bushes. The second set features top-down shots lying in the flowers. This angle places a heavy test on the surrounding plant distribution; it requires pushing aside the flower leaves and then laying the body flat, fanning out the hair and slightly adjusting the position of the skirt hem, allowing the purple skirt and black over-knee socks to occupy the visual focus at the bottom of the frame. The third set consists of side-standing shots, with the back to the camera looking up, or holding a hydrangea flower close to the face, utilizing a slight backlight to trace a soft rim of light on the hair strands.

The entire shooting process was a real test of physical strength, but we found many interesting camera positions through communication and experimentation. This kind of large-area, pure-colored plant background actually tests the expression of the character's center of gravity; if the posing is too deliberate, it feels rigid instead. Therefore, when guiding the actions, we did not intentionally pursue exaggerated emotional outputs, but rather maintained a casual, everyday state. Whether it was closed-eye resting or simply looking down at the flowers, capturing these subtle dynamics actually increased the breathing room of the frame.

For anime cosplay, it's not just about restoring external characteristics, but also a process of continuously searching for a reality environment that fits the character's mood. This experience of a hydrangea photoshoot at Xiangyu Baihuayuan, from scouting locations to the final production, exceeded expectations despite constraints from weather and venue foot traffic. Thanks to the photographer and everyone who accompanied us for endowing this set of photos with a refreshing yet slightly end-of-summer melancholy texture.
