[Vivian cosplay] Zenless Zone Zero Mockingbird

This Zenless Zone Zero Mockingbird-themed cosplay featuring Hugo and Vivian was shot entirely inside a vintage study. From the planning stage onward, this shoot placed a heavier emphasis on atmospheric ambiance than any of my previous projects. The Mockingbird faction lore carries a distinct retro and elegant aura, so when selecting a location, photographer Baidian specifically recommended this space featuring a grand grandfather clock, an antique rotary phone, and floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. The carved wooden sofa and crimson walls paired with warm yellowish candlelight instantly established that classic, old-school aesthetic. During pre-shoot consultations, we agreed to utilize authentic props to enrich the narrative depth of the frames, actively incorporating the vintage grand clock behind the sofa and the flip desk clock into our setups.

I portrayed Vivian. The standout feature of this costume is its voluminous ruffles and blue-and-white color scheme, leaning into classical maid elements while remaining far more ornate. Because the dress has multiple layers, it felt slightly heavy when worn, yet the visual payoff was astonishing, with the skirt hems flowing gracefully with every step. Sorting out the dark blue bow atop my head and the purple wig with white streak highlights required a tremendous amount of time. In particular, styling the pointed elf-ear wig to maintain its fixed shape while letting the ears peek through naturally demanded meticulous care, and I paid close attention to choosing a material that offered a semi-translucent glow. Eye makeup heavily emphasized gaze expression; I selected specific contact lenses and paired them with precise eyeliner techniques to closely match Vivian's quiet yet mysterious aura. Since her emotional intensity runs quite high, I had to keep my facial expressions restrained in front of the lens, letting my eyes carry the narrative—an aspect that required deep character study on my part.

What surprised me most this time was the unity of lighting, shadow, and color. The photographer utilized candle lighting to craft natural contrast and gradients, making skin textures look gorgeous under the glow while enriching the depth of the crimson walls; combined with the brown leather sofa, it yielded an oil-painting-like quality. Whether I sat holding a book or gazed toward the lens on the sofa, the presence of Black stockings, the leather straps around my lower calves, and the sweeping skirt hem made my overall silhouette look exceptionally slender. I also adore the composition of the second solo shot: seated right in the middle of the sofa holding a book, that slightly examining angle captured the character's exact demeanor. The third duo shot utilized depth of field to space out foreground and background distances, creating a classic portrait pairing where the male partner's structured suit visually complemented my elaborate ruffles.

There were plenty of fun anecdotes during the shoot as well. To channel that classic Mockingbird vibe, the photographer kept telling me to gaze toward the antique phone or reach for the books on the desk. That phone was surprisingly heavy, requiring careful handling to avoid disturbing its delicate mechanical components. Sitting on the sofa presented its own challenges; because the skirt was so voluminous, it easily caught creases, forcing me to constantly readjust my posture to find the angle that preserved the costume's lines best—honestly a minor physical workout. But seeing the final results made that immersive retro ambiance completely worth it. During set design, we even took care to prep tiny details like the vintage feather quill and pocket watch on the table, as the fine texture of these small props echoed the retro aesthetic of the Mockingbird lore.

A huge thank you to my partner Xiaoqi. Hugo's suit had a wonderfully structured crispness, exuding natural authority just by standing there, and his gaze was spot-on, perfectly matching my movements with seamless rapport. Sincere thanks as well to Baidian for his meticulous care, patience, and relentless pursuit of lighting perfection; it is thanks to him that this photo set carries such powerful storytelling. As a cosplayer, getting to interpret a character carrying this historical weight and subtle emotional nuance is an incredible experience. Although the journey had its grueling moments, the final outcome is immensely satisfying. I hope to convey the unique charm of Mockingbird through these photos and look forward to tackling this style again in the future.
