[Sunohara Kokona cosplay] Blue Archive Instructor Transforms into a Magical Girl, White Stockings and Black Skirt Shine at Firefly ACG Expo

Changing into this silver-white long wig, putting on the small black top hat with a blue bow and a slender silver rod, and holding the star wand in my hand, I immediately entered the character's state. As Sunohara Kokona, the appearance is consistently exquisite and cute, but the inner heart must always maintain the rigor and vitality of an "instructor." This time at Firefly ACG Expo, I chose a modified magical girl-style outfit. This look adds many bright blue elements to the original black-and-white stripes; the yellow pentagram on the chest echoes the wand in my hand, breaking the convention and adding a bit of fantasy to myself.

The details of this costume are actually very refined. The upper body is a black sleeveless fine-striped dress with a white neckline, paired with a massive sapphire blue bow; white ruffles are sewn onto the oversleeves, forming an excellent color unity with the white gloves and the over-knee white stockings on the legs. Wearing black high-heeled Mary Jane shoes, the buckle at the ankle and the small blue bow dotting the toe make the overall sweetness of the outfit just right. In the early stages of preparing this Anime-style fashion look, what gave me the biggest headache was that small top hat and the thin rod extending from it. Such custom accessories are often prone to wobbling; to ensure it wouldn't fall off during long shooting hours on the day of the convention, I specially used clips for multiple fixing. The silver-white wig is long and thick; although the styling is beautiful, shooting outdoors under the scorching sun indeed added a lot to the perceived temperature.

On the day of the shoot, the photographer Orange Peel and I chose to shoot at a park location near Firefly ACG Expo. The natural light here is very translucent, with tree-lined shades, and the background is a largely blurred bright green. This clean and bright background perfectly highlights the coldness of the silver-white hair color and the eye-catching blue and black in the costume. During the shoot, Orange Peel was very adept at capturing that naturally flowing dynamic, rather than just standing stiffly posing. For example, the photo where I'm standing on one leg and holding the wand reaching forward was a snapshot taken just as I finished a light jumping movement; this pose happens to make the lines of the over-knee white stockings and black high heels look exceptionally smooth in the sunlight, and the color clash of black, white, and blue delivers a strong visual impact. Meanwhile, the photo of sitting on the ground creates a slightly lazy atmosphere; placing the prop by my feet, with knees slightly bent, paired with a very soft facial expression, instantly gave the entire frame a sense of story.

The matching of white stockings and black high heels, although a classic element in many Anime-style fashion looks, requires extra care during actual shooting. White stockings easily attract dust and grass clippings from the ground, so when shooting outdoors, you must be particularly careful to avoid walking on the grass. You need to check for any dirt during every break; otherwise, it will look less than exquisite when the close-up lens zooms in. High-heeled Mary Jane shoes are actually not very stable to walk in; shooting with high-step postures requires controlling your center of gravity. Fortunately, the floor tiles we chose this time were flat, allowing me to confidently strike various stretched-out poses. When coordinating with the star wand prop, I intentionally added more playful little details to my movements, like hooking the wand's rod with my finger or half-hiding it by the oversleeve. This makes the character appear less rigid and better fits the lively personality of "making sensei happy every day."

At the convention, many passing friends actually recognized this Sunohara Kokona cosplay look. Everyone expressed a lot of interesting interaction regarding this "Mahou Shoujo" style instructor, which is exactly the most charming part of Cosplay. Through clothing matches, makeup depiction, and movement design, we can make the settings originally stuck on the screen become three-dimensional. For newbies wanting to try this style of Anime-style fashion, my biggest advice is to consider the outdoor shooting lighting well in advance. Silver-white wigs easily overexpose under strong light; scattered light on slightly cloudy days or under the shade of trees actually highlights the texture best. At the same time, when having large pure color items like over-knee white stockings and black high heels, you must prepare well for logistical cleaning; bringing wet wipes and a small lint roller will make the shooting process much smoother.

This shooting experience at Firefly ACG Expo was very delightful. A lot of thought was poured into everything from preparing costumes and props to the on-site camera directing. Although the hair was heavy and walking in high heels for a long time was tiring, when I saw myself in the final cuts—possessing both the seriousness of an instructor and the vitality of a magical girl—all the fatigue vanished.
