Bringing this Arknights magical girl concept Emma and Hiro cosplay to life took considerable care from preparation to final delivery. Teaming up with @Aaa小琳—with me cosplaying Emma and her cosplaying Hiro—photographer Yelu took us directly to an industrial-style venue.
The most arduous props were undoubtedly the stained-glass wings on our backs: stunning on camera, but extraordinarily heavy, making turning around in narrow spaces prone to bumping into each other. To make our duo interactions flow naturally, we spent a long time rehearsing with character dialogue before shooting. Hiro's line, 'Even if I must make an enemy of the entire world, I will protect Emma,' alongside Emma's reply, 'We are friends, we're getting out together,' served as our emotional anchors. When capturing back-to-back poses and reaching out toward one another, the emotional tension of protecting and being protected surfaced effortlessly.
Regarding garment details, my Emma look featured a black sailor-collar long-sleeve top where the red-and-white stripes along the collar and cuffs served as the finishing touch, while the purplish-red plaid tie and golden chains at the chest introduced rich visual layers. To channel that blend of cool stoicism and gentle vulnerability, I deliberately trimmed blunt bangs into long, straight black hair, paired with crimson eyes. Xiao Lin's Hiro featured white hair with pink-gradient tips and pink pupils; her beret adorned with white blossoms and black clips, paired with the purple gemstone bow tie at her collar and leather harness leg straps, dialed the magical girl's fantastical yet battle-worn edge to the max.
To accentuate body proportions and wardrobe cuts during the shoot, we spread mats across the floor, experimenting with side-seated postures and extended leg lines. Black stockings ankle socks paired with glossy patent leather dress shoes, complemented by the gentle pinch of the thigh harness straps, delivered superb texture under cool overhead lighting. The interactive gesture in Photo 6 with both arms reaching forward demanded tight core engagement and taut leg muscles to maintain balance, which Xiao Lin executed flawlessly. My half-kneeling poses and hair-tucking gestures were choreographed to showcase the drape of the expansive black trench coat and plaid skirt.
Set against the dark-toned backdrop, relying on the vibrant wings and high-contrast black-and-white costumes created commanding visual impact. The high chromatic saturation against the venue's industrial chill yielded frames charged with dramatic tension. I am particularly thrilled with the lighting and mood of this set, and I hope everyone feels the resonance of this bond forged fighting side by side.
