This Grinning Professor cosplay photoshoot had actually been in the works for a long time, centered around how to capture the character's unruffled composure and elegance. To complement the vintage palette in this Retro style cosplay, we specifically selected warm orange lighting for the environment and prepared a long cane prop to enhance the linear aesthetics of the composition—holding the cane, in particular, required maintaining a ramrod posture to ensure flawless poise. The wig featured long, voluminous cascading curls that carried noticeable weight, putting our wig-securing methods to the test. The crescent-shaped ornament on the hat was crucial, defining the character's first impression; its angle required repeated adjustment, as even a slight tilt would detract from her sharp, calculating look.
For the wardrobe, I chose a structured long trench coat made from firm fabric that sculpted clean shoulder contours. Beneath it, I paired a dark dress with a red bow tie; the vibrancy of this red popped cleanly under the warm lighting without feeling muddy. To match this opulent, vintage interior, the lower half incorporated Black stockings cosplay elements and lace-trimmed High-heeled boots. Under the lights, the fabric yielded subtle reflections that elongated leg lines and heightened the enigmatic aura intrinsic to the character design in Blue Archive. During the shoot, we tested multiple poses: standing upright, leaning on the cane with one hand while lightly raising the chin with the other—a gesture that best conveyed that evaluating, scrutinizing gaze. We also explored tilting the head back slightly and glancing back over the shoulder before settling on this final shot. After thorough discussions with the photographer regarding lighting angles, we opted for high-contrast chiaroscuro lighting that subtly subdued details of the carved sofa and bookshelves in the background, allowing the subject to stand out crisply. The entire shoot placed heavy demands on expression control, requiring a subtle, confident half-smile.
In post-processing, the focus was placed on color harmony. We avoided excessive skin smoothing to preserve genuine textures, as vintage aesthetic inherently demands realism. A slight vignette was also applied along the edges to draw the viewer's focus directly to the character. This set represents a satisfying exploration of Retro style cosplay; from tailoring to prop selection, everything referenced canonical Blue Archive designs, aiming to offer everyone a distinctive visual experience. Reflecting on the makeup, the eye makeup was kept sharp and defined without heavy smudging, ensuring facial clarity even in the warm, dim ambient light. Standing for half an hour in such elaborate attire was certainly no easy feat, but seeing the final result made every bit of effort feel worthwhile. We spent substantial time securing the headwear so it would maintain an exquisite silhouette without slipping when I tilted my head. Though the cane wasn't heavy, gripping it for long periods stiffened my fingers, so we split the shoot into multiple rounds, refining different details with each take. The greatest joy of doing this work is stepping into different life perspectives through diverse stylings and immortalizing them through the lens.
