Today I cosplayed the Priestess from Identity V at the Zhongshan AS anime convention. This costume is a black-and-red Gothic maid dress that I prepared for a long time before the convention. To restore the character design, I did a lot of homework on the details. The main body of the dress is made of black fabric with dark patterns and a glossy feel, covered with a layer of white apron outside. The most eye-catching part should be the large amount of red translucent tulle and red roses decorated on the chest and waist. These flowers were hand-fixed one by one; because the tulle material is relatively slippery, fixing it took quite a bit of effort.
The wig is bright red short hair, with a streak of white highlights purposely done at the bangs. To make the hairstyle more dimensional, a lot of styling spray was used at the roots. In terms of makeup, red circle lenses are a must. I tried several ways of drawing the red teardrop makeup under the eyes, finally selecting this blended effect with a gradient feel. Paired with the red eyeshadow at the outer corners of the eyes, it brings the overall temperament closer to the character's mysterious vibe.
The devil horns of the headpiece are fixed with a headband and special glue. Walking around the convention all day, I always worried they would go crooked, so every once in a while I would quietly go to the restroom to adjust them. The small silver tray in my hand is a prop I matched myself. The edge of the tray was deliberately made with some dark-style decorations. During the shoot, this prop greatly enriched the frame, and paired with the posture of raising a leg and reaching out, it could showcase a better dynamic sense.
Walking around the convention site wearing white pantyhose and black thick-soled Mary Jane shoes is actually a severe test of physical stamina. Although the heels are thick, the soles of my feet were still somewhat sore after a whole day. However, to pull off this styling, all this hardship was worth it. The foot traffic at the Zhongshan AS anime convention site was quite large, and the lighting environment was also relatively complex. Although the top lighting had a high-brightness effect, it often cast strange shadows on the face. I communicated with the photographer for a long time, looking for different perspectives and light positions, and finally found a few locations that could perfectly avoid the top light while utilizing the on-site ambient light.
During the shoot, to showcase the fluffiness of the skirt hem and the visual effect of the white stockings, I tried a one-legged standing posture. This pose requires core strength support, and at the same time, attention must be paid to expression management, because even a slight shake would cause the image to blur. The photographer captured many shots, and the finally selected photos indeed captured the moment of the skirt hem flying in the wind very well.
Besides shooting, I also strolled around the convention's booths and met many players who love Identity V. Everyone enthusiastically chatted with me about the Priestess's skills and gameplay in the game. Being able to communicate with everyone in the form of cosplay is a very meaningful thing. The anime-style photography atmosphere at the site was very strong, with many photographers carrying professional equipment, exchanging ideas on lighting and composition with each other, which also taught me a lot of knowledge about anime-style photography.
From design to final finished photos, every step of this styling was filled with challenges. Being able to bring the character Priestess into the real world and record it through the lens is my biggest harvest from this convention. Looking forward to presenting better convention photos to everyone next time.
