I did plenty of preparation beforehand to bring Blue Archive's Iochi Mari to life. Iochi Mari inherently carries strong athletic traits, so for the wardrobe, I faithfully followed the official design with a white-and-blue sporty track jacket and pleated mini skirt. To accentuate the character's energetic aura, both hair and makeup leaned into clean, crisp styling. Golden blonde locks paired with a white headband, topped with fluffy animal ears, instantly transformed my overall presence. I layered and thinned the wig so the edges flowed naturally without appearing overly bulky.
The shoot was set in a pure white studio paired with a soft lavender yoga mat, aiming to create a clean, refreshing athletic atmosphere. For props, I brought a mint-green and white volleyball stamped with volleyball lettering, adding neat authenticity. Throughout the shoot, special attention was paid to presenting the White stockings. I wore white knee-high socks; while it is a classic staple, adjusting poses was vital to sculpt flattering leg lines without looking bulky.
The first sequence was sitting on the mat cradling the volleyball. This posture demands notable core strength: raising the legs requires bending the knees slightly while pointing the toes, ensuring the contours wrapped in White stockings look fluid. To find the optimal angle, the photographer gave continuous guidance—having me tuck my chin slightly and fix a focused yet innocent gaze upon the camera. Cradling the volleyball with slight forearm tension kept the garment folds and bodily posture sharp. After dozens of takes, we finally locked in a shot where both leg angles and facial expressions were spot on.
The second setup featured seated stretching. This pose easily exposes leg imperfections because extending the legs straight can look heavy if muscle lines are tense. I paid close attention to pointing the insteps downward to keep the ankles looking slender. Leaning the torso forward required keeping the spine straight rather than slouching, reaching both hands toward the toes while tilting my head subtly toward the lens. The photographer cast light from the front-diagonal; paired with the white backdrop, the light ratio was dialed in perfectly, rendering skin and White stockings with luminous clarity. Resting the volleyball beside me not only filled empty space but heightened the sporty energy of the frame.
The third setup involved sitting, hugging the ball, and gazing into the lens. This pose was comparatively relaxed, though I stayed mindful not to slump completely. Crossing and folding my legs beautifully showcased the fabric texture of the White stockings, while leaning forward to wrap both arms around the volleyball let my chin rest gently against it. That captured moment yielded lovely angles both in profile and head-on. The great advantage of studio shoots is steady, predictable lighting without shifting natural daylight. Wearing White stockings can be angle-sensitive, but nailing body language in harmony with the backdrop guarantees a high success rate.
From preparation to shooting, this project took a week. To channel that sporty girl vibrancy, I put considerable effort into physical expression, avoiding stiff standing poses in favor of seated poses and stretches that evoke casual, everyday relaxation. It was physically demanding—constantly shifting postures on the mat in White stockings while managing micro-expressions—yet seeing the final images made every refinement worthwhile. Mari's sunny, cheerful demeanor was captured seamlessly through the synergy of White stockings and athletic attire against the white backdrop, achieving both anime fidelity and an authentic sporty spirit.
