[Beigang Huoshan cosplay] Umamusume: Pretty Derby: Formidable Oppressive aura, Ultimate Tension Captured in Night Photography

The sense of power and Oppressive aura of the character Beigang Huoshan were the core qualities I focused on portraying in this shoot. The shooting day happened to be 20260815 at Anime Star City, where the nighttime plaza environment was much easier to control than daytime, making it effortless to craft this ultra-dark backdrop.

Special thanks to photographer NightDiva, who used a high-angle direct flash setup. This lighting completely dropped the surrounding ambient environment into darkness, illuminating only the subject. This hard light cast crisp, sharp shadows between the body and the ground, aligning perfectly with the formidable Oppressive aura concept. Under such extreme lighting conditions, costume details—like the blue stripes on the skirt hem, cuff designs, and the cat-ear cap and hair accessories—were rendered exceptionally well. Meanwhile, to prevent harsh lighting from creating a stiff look, we designed a variety of poses.

To align with 2D character traits, the white-and-blue sailor dress paired with over-the-knee White stockings served as crucial visual elements. To ensure flattering leg lines, I constantly adjusted standing postures during the shoot. Poses requiring stretched leg lines or engaged standing stances thoroughly tested core strength. For instance, the pose crouching on the luggage required lowering my center of gravity while keeping my torso upright, looking straight into the lens to project an intense Oppressive aura. When gusts of wind blew, lifting the ponytail, it serendipitously added dynamic motion—all authentic on-site experiences.

Night shooting brought many challenges: the plaza floor tiles were hard, causing sore feet after standing in leather shoes for hours, all while maintaining peak facial expressions. However, seeing the final images made every bit of effort worthwhile. From the gentleness of sitting on the suitcase stroking my hair, to the lively energy of standing on one leg, to the elongated legs and Oppressive aura shown in the crouching stance, each action demanded mindful nuance. This collaboration not only tested my styling execution but also taught me how to utilize body language under hard direct night lighting under the photographer's guidance. The entire photo set carries a captivating stage presence, making all the arduous posing feel rewarding. Given the chance next time, I hope to explore more night hard-light shoots across diverse styles.
