Shooting this Firefly JK styling concept from Honkai: Star Rail was a truly unique experience. The main outfit features an anime-inspired sailor suit with a white long-sleeved top accented by deep blue collars and cuffs, complete with exquisite golden floral embroidery across the shoulders. To faithfully convey the character's nuances, the chest was adorned with a gradient ribbon bow and metallic accessories, while hair ornamentation combined navy bows with cyan wing-shaped hairpins. The lower half features a slate-blue plaid pleated skirt, paired with White stockings over-the-knee socks and glossy black loafers. For makeup, blue-violet contact lenses were chosen alongside soft pinkish eye makeup and blue-painted nails. Carrying a brown vintage briefcase added an authentic touch of student life and everyday realism to the overall styling.
For the outdoor location, we selected a covered urban skybridge corridor with extensive glass curtain walls and metallic balustrades, allowing natural light to filter through with remarkable clarity. Handling both photography and post-processing myself for this Xi'an cosplay project, I held exacting standards for framing angles and lighting. To evoke dynamic vitality, I kept the camera primarily at eye-level or slightly elevated angles, synchronizing with Firefly's jumping, half-squatting, and backward-glancing motions. The pose in Photo 1—lifting one leg backward—severely tested core stability; to preserve the graceful curve of the skirt hem and fluid leg lines, we readjusted center-of-gravity placement repeatedly. When framing the White stockings and plaid skirt, special care went into dodging distracting reflections so the glass architecture created a clean sense of spatial extension. Photo 7 captured a turn-around glance right as a breeze swept through, lifting the hair ends and collar ribbons; to seize that airy flutter, the shutter speed was dialed up fast, firing continuous bursts to catch the most natural frame.
Throughout the entire shoot, Firefly's iconic lines kept echoing in my mind: "Even a life as fragile as cicada wings holds the potential to burn brilliantly." In battle, we will ultimately uncover the answers we seek. These lines provided immense emotional guidance. Because Firefly harbors a deeply poignant and tender core, when portraying her in this lighter JK uniform concept, I intentionally kept the expressions and poses more vivacious—such as the cat-paw pose in Photo 4 and the peace sign in Photo 7, both striving to seize an authentic slice of daily vibrancy. In Photo 6, sitting on the window ledge stretching my legs, that relaxed serenity felt like a tangible embodiment of "Good times always fly by so fast; see you next time!" In terms of composition, I love using architectural curves to direct lines of sight. Photos 3 and 5 were both framed at the corridor's turn; the angled railings and ground lines visually elongate proportions while highlighting the White stockings and skirt hem, preventing the frame from feeling flat.
Immense effort went into every stage, from wardrobe preparation to color grading. During retouching, I preserved the tactile sheen of the golden thread embroidery and the soft gradient transitions of the White stockings under natural ambient light, steering colors toward a crisp, luminous tone. This Firefly JK interpretation is a passion project prepared with utmost care, and I hope viewers can feel the character's pure spirit—longing for beauty even amidst adversity and chasing dreams one step at a time. Perhaps in the end, I too will hold a dream of my own; as long as we keep moving forward step by step, it will come true. That side profile shot tucking hair behind the ear in Photo 9 came toward the very end when shifting light angles created a rim-lit effect, tracing the silhouette of hair and shoulders—a delightful surprise. Every image in this set is an exploration of the character's possibilities, anchored purely in the interplay of light and shadow and a heartfelt understanding of the role.
