To faithfully recreate the canonical texture from the game, this Ruan Mei outfit underwent three separate rounds of adjustments (Honkai: Star Rail & Ruan Mei cosplay). From the splicing of the blue silk across the bust to the delicate needlework of golden embroidery along the trims, and the fluid drape of the semi-sheer chiffon sleeves, every single nuance was pushed as close as possible to the original design. To complement the overall look, I specially prepared a Pipa prop adorned in a blue-and-gold color scheme with pink floral accents. While this Pipa looks breathtakingly ornate, it carries considerable actual heft; holding it aloft with one hand or cradling it across my chest during shooting proved to be quite an endurance test for arm strength.
The staging on the day of the shoot also took immense dedication. To build an Eastern classical ambiance that harmonized with the character, we constructed wooden lattice window frames and a circular moon gate. A pure-blue backdrop curtain was draped behind, while white lanterns painted with bamboo leaves hung from above, complemented by clusters of blossoming white branches. The overall palette blended cool, aloof elegance with subtle vital warmth. The floor was layered with a plush white rug, making it convenient to experiment with diverse seated and reclining postures in this Ancient style cosplay.
For pose design, I explored several distinct moods. At first, I sat upright cradling the Pipa; sitting poised required keeping my spine strictly straight, with a gaze imbued with a touch of aloof detachment. Later, the photographer suggested reclining on the plush rug—a posture that demanded high physical flexibility and bodily extension. Lying on my side required supporting my body weight on one elbow while carefully controlling the placement of my legs, showcasing graceful contours without allowing the frame to appear rigid. To lock in the right ocular focus, I nearly lost my balance and toppled over several times, but fortunately, the final results turned out deeply satisfying.
The lighting setup on set leaned toward soft diffusion, primarily aimed at accentuating natural skin textures and the lustrous reflections of the garment fabrics. Because the background was a cool-toned blue, subtle warm tones were blended into the key skin lighting so the overall frame wouldn't feel overly frigid. On the right side of the composition sat a wooden tea table with white ceramic wine vessels, while on the left, red floral branches bloomed from a black earthenware vase. Though subtle, these props provided magnificent chromatic accents for this Chinese style photography.
When channeling the character of Ruan Mei, I focused on amplifying her unhurried composure—that supreme serenity where everything remains effortlessly within her grasp. Even a single direct gaze into the lens demanded extreme inner stillness. To align with the intended aesthetic, I minimized exaggerated movements on set, preserving a poised, static grace. The entire shoot was genuinely exhausting, handling everything personally from garment upkeep to hauling heavy props, but the moment I laid eyes on the final cuts, every drop of sweat felt completely worthwhile in this Honkai: Star Rail Ruan Mei cosplay.
