[Reimu Hakurei Cosplay] Touhou Project's Red and White Shrine Maiden, a Record of Strolling in the Woods in Landscape Orientation

Shooting this set of Reimu Hakurei's Touhou fan-design look under outdoor natural light actually took a bit more effort than imagined. Many fellow fans might think that a red-and-white Shrine maiden outfit is easier to control lighting for in an indoor studio shoot, but I personally prefer this naturally dappled light and shadow environment. The fallen leaves on the ground, the moss on the stone steps, and the lace ruffles of the clothes form a beautiful texture contrast.

When holding that custom gohei (purification rod), it did feel a bit heavy, especially since I had to keep my posture naturally extended in a landscape composition; the finger leverage point had to be just right. Regarding the styling choice for this fan-design, I made specific pairings for the hair accessories—a large red and white bow combined with hanging tassels, placing the visual center of gravity on top of the head. The white skirt interwoven with red ribbons, coupled with the richly layered lace trim, makes it incredibly easy to yield great shots even against a background shaded by green trees.

I must specifically mention the experience of wearing white over-the-knee long socks during the shoot; they truly helped a lot, beautifully shaping the legs while seamlessly transitioning to the wooden clogs on my feet. This semi-bare-legged style of wearing adds an extra layer of lightweight grace to the entire landscape composition amidst the green woods, preventing the lower body from appearing too heavy.

While staying couched up in the room editing photos daily, I often miss the smell of mud and grass on my body after that day's shoot. The moment natural light hit my face, I believed props and costumes hold the power to co-express with emotions. When shooting attire with a large amount of white lace or puffy skirts, remember to choose front-lit or side-front-lit periods to avoid blown-out whites or pure black shadows. The camera's color reproduction on-site was highly comfortable, barely requiring any color grading to achieve a faint, soft texture.

Looking back at these few landscape shots, I truly can't help but want to record this beautiful moment of strolling through the woods. Personally, I am most satisfied with that snapshot of sitting on the stone steps; the surroundings were very quiet, making even the rustling sound of the wind blowing through the leaves exceptionally clear. The posture of the clothing's skirt hem was also just right, not deliberately showy but rather carrying a feeling of blending into the daily atmosphere. Touhou Project inherently carries a deep fantasy undertone, but these fan-designed styles often weave this divinity together with a sense of daily life, fitting this authentic light and shadow perfectly. Walking in the woods wearing this outfit and adjusting the angle of the prop, I unconsciously slipped into the character state. Some might wonder if a landscape composition makes the frame look empty, but as long as you find suitable thickets to serve as a framework, coupled with the positioning of the central figure and the tension of the skirt hem, the sense of space becomes highly three-dimensional.

Although this gear is gorgeous, it is relatively convenient for outdoor movement. Minor details of the costume, like the accessories around the neck and the lace on the cuffs, offer great visual extension when turning around or looking down. I hope to explore more possibilities of combining this kind of Anime cosplay fan-design with natural environments in the future, continuing to capture this relaxed and comfortable atmosphere through outdoor portrait photography.
