Today I shot a series of Moriya Suwako photos beside a lotus pond. Though the heat was intense, I braved the blazing sun on location to fully capture the aura of this iconic Touhou Project character. The straw hat adorned with eye emblems serves as the very soul of this styling; paired with the purple pinafore dress and white translucent capelet, the chromatic contrast popped brilliantly against the verdant backdrop of lotus leaves. Holding a freshly plucked lotus leaf as a prop was far heavier than anticipated; maintaining poses required steady arm control, as any lapse in tension would cause trembling. To evoke that unforced, subtly mystical retro atmosphere, I deliberately slowed my usual posing rhythm, finessing the placement of every fingertip to honor the character's temperament.
Looking at wardrobe details: the purple dress featured subtle jacquard weave and embroidery that revealed rich textures in close-up frames. Red cords and tassel accents adorned the white capelet, creating a clear visual focal point and preventing the overall palette from feeling monotonous. Pairing White stockings with white plush shoes stayed true to canon design, though walking across grass and stone demanded extra caution since outdoor terrain is damp and slick. To flatter leg lines, seated and standing stances were rehearsed repeatedly, aiming to let the skirt drape naturally while ensuring limbs appeared elongated rather than stiff.
Lighting conditions shifted rapidly during the shoot. To capture both the vivid emerald of the foliage and the translucent clarity of sunlight, I explored diverse camera angles. Sitting among the tall grasses meant spreading the hem smoothly for fluid lines while deliberately framing out messy withered leaves to maintain pristine composition. Stepping back for wide-angle frames, the distant lake surface and rolling mountains supplied magnificent spatial depth; the moment the breeze caught the capelet and set it fluttering, every drop of sweat and fatigue felt completely justified. In outdoor shoots with expansive green and purple contrasts, color banding is always a concern, so I coordinated with the photographer beforehand regarding color grading—prioritizing unvarnished organic realism over aggressive skin smoothing or heavy filters.
This location shoot offered valuable lessons in outdoor photography, from maintaining steady facial expressions under piercing sunlight to utilizing the lotus leaf prop for interactive charm. The leaf's edges were slightly sharp, leaving faint red marks along my forearm after extended handling, yet the final captures were thoroughly gratifying. Harmonizing costume textures closely with the natural setting required patient care at every step, from setting the wig to securing accessories. Preserving such a sun-drenched, summer-infused Touhou Project memory during this season was an absolute delight. Walking away drenched in sweat at the end of the day, reviewing the satisfying raw captures proved that every bit of effort was worth it. I look forward to finding equally fitting locations in the future to explore even more diverse character portrayals.
