This set of photos was truly a hardcore shooting experience. While it may look on the surface like just striking a few graceful poses by the water, the actual shoot was full of challenges.

First, regarding props, our prop master prepared authentic Lotus leaf specimens. A real lotus leaf has a waxy surface where water droplets bead and roll around, but it is quite heavy and the stem is exceptionally fragile. Holding it like an umbrella meant maintaining the umbrella-like shape without letting it droop, while being careful not to let pooled water drip onto my face or clothes—finding the right angle was very difficult. The golden ring prop was also heavier than anticipated, putting considerable strain on my wrist when held with one hand.

The location was set beside a lotus pond where the waterside stones were overgrown with moss, making them extremely slick. This was especially true for the standing shot with one leg raised (the cover image): to convey playful charm, I had to balance on one foot along the narrow rim of a stone with the other leg kicked back, all while keeping my upper body straight. Finding my balance required over a dozen attempts. Wearing White stockings and round-toed leather shoes meant that the slightest misstep could easily lead to slipping, and I constantly had to watch my skirt to ensure the white hem didn't get stained with mud.

The outfit is this modified white Japanese-style attire. The structured fabric of the wide sleeves and apron tended to develop fine creases easily. The voluminous sleeves caught the breeze whenever I raised my arms, appearing bulky, so I had to intentionally smooth the drape of the cuffs before every click of the shutter. Wearing White stockings outdoors in the summer heat was quite stifling, and keeping mosquitoes at bay proved to be another real outdoor challenge.

As for lighting, tall trees surrounded the location, creating dappled woodland light. Under such lighting, failing to bounce light onto the face would leave it lost in deep shadow, so the photographer held a reflector throughout, constantly shifting according to the sun's position. Particularly for the crouching shot on the grass, reflector placement was severely constrained—balancing the fill to prevent harsh glare while preserving the airy ambiance of the setting demanded meticulous light control.

A significant part of this set's mood owes thanks to the natural environment. Just as the photographer noted, between shutter clicks we could genuinely hear choruses of frogs croaking all around, echoing the classic verse of 'frogs croaking in unison.' Expansive layers of lotus leaves across the water softly veiled the whitewashed walls and black-tiled roofs in the distance, enriching the backdrop's depth. We intentionally enlarged the subject in the composition, using a wide aperture to gently soften the background greenery so the colors wouldn't appear cluttered, highlighting the contrast between the white costume and the green props.

Post-processing preserved the overall fresh green palette without relying on exaggerated filters, making minor adjustments to contrast to showcase the veins of the Lotus leaf and elongating leg lines for balanced proportions. Our synergy with the photographer was seamless, bringing out the character's natural, spirited agility.

The entire experience was a bittersweet trial, yet the finished stills aligned impeccably with what I envisioned. Every hardcore shooting session infuses the finished work with that extra touch of authentic storytelling.
