[Cheshire Cosplay] Azur Lane's Royal Heavy Cruiser: New Year Cheongsam Convention Photos

Cosplaying Cheshire's New Year cheongsam from Azur Lane—these convention photos were taken during my free-pass entry at the Changsha Aozora School Festival anime convention. As a Royal Navy heavy cruiser, Cheshire inherently carries an elegant yet vivacious aura. Under the New Year-themed costume design, the red-and-white modified cheongsam provides striking visual impact, effortlessly catching everyone's eyes amidst the bustling convention crowd.

I chose this Cheongsam cosplay for several reasons, primarily because it seamlessly blends traditional Chinese elements with anime aesthetic design. The cutout detail at the neck and the golden frog buttons boast great tactile quality, while the printed black sheer mesh across the chest reveals just the right level of layering—embodying the regal dignity of a traditional cheongsam while honoring the character design from Azur Lane. On the convention floor, this festive red high-slit design was a huge hit with photographers. The fluffy white plush shawl not only looks visually rich and voluminous, but wearing it on site to convey a chilly winter New Year vibe also tested my endurance and styling stability; thankfully, the venue's air conditioning was pleasantly cool, allowing everyone to coordinate smoothly.

Now let's talk about the hair and makeup. To recreate Cheshire's iconic traits, the wig featured a dark gray base with vibrant lake-blue highlights; the distinct layering in the bangs and hair ends provided high color saturation on camera and looked delightfully energetic when paired with light-blue contact lenses. The hair accessories were especially noteworthy: white lace ruffles, red floral pom-poms, and golden embroidered accents—every tiny detail strove to faithfully match the original lore. Because the styling is intricate, the wig and headdress hat had to be firmly anchored during shooting to prevent shifting when turning or making large movements, requiring repeated fine adjustments on site with the stylist and photographer to ensure optimal results in the final images.

In terms of posing, to highlight the high-slit design of the cheongsam and flatter the legs, the photographer deliberately framed ample space for the lower body. Wearing a White thigh-highs outfit trimmed with lace along with chunky high heels, walking on the venue's gray concrete floor wasn't slippery thanks to the shoes' excellent grip. Holding the scroll inscribed with "Happy New Year," the photographer and I experimented with various angles—seated poses, single-leg lifts, and medium close-ups. For instance, the pose balancing on one leg drew inspiration from ballet stances, requiring complete center-of-gravity control on a single leg while holding the weighted scroll prop, which was a nice little workout for core strength. Although the convention floor was bustling with passersby, the booth background was nicely blurred by the wide aperture, and the lighting on the red gown and white fur made the subject pop vividly.

I personally adore the compositions of the half-body and seated shots, where the lens perspective extends along the cheongsam's contours down to the legs, capturing both the playfulness of an anime character and the gentle grace unique to female cosplay. Furthermore, while everyone knows that a high slit drastically elongates leg lines and elevates poise, cosplayers must take safety precautions: I wore safety shorts underneath so I could execute wide stances and dynamic poses with complete peace of mind—an essential shooting tip when portraying such alluring characters.

The initial spark for this photoshoot came from genuine love for this Azur Lane character. As a Royal Navy heavy cruiser, Cheshire takes on extra festive meaning when endowed with New Year cheongsam elements. The atmosphere at the Changsha Aozora School Festival has always been wonderful, and the lighting and composition spaces available on site were ideal for crafting such detailed Convention photos. Throughout that day's packed schedule, this red-and-white cheongsam was the featured highlight of the afternoon; while the weight of the garments and complexity of the styling demanded stamina, seeing these Convention photos made every moment feel completely worthwhile. In daily cosplay practice, I place great emphasis on costume fidelity and natural emotional expression—sometimes fine-tuning the fluffy angle of a fur collar or the tilt of a hairpiece requires extensive on-site coordination. Yet the moment the photos turn out, all the fatigue melts away into the frames. This red-and-white New Year Cheshire Cosplay not only embodies the vibrant energy of Azur Lane, but also blends seamlessly into the joyous celebration of welcoming the New Year.
