[Hatsune Miku cosplay] Rabbit Hole Wink Challenge Success

Last night, I shot this Hatsune Miku Rabbit Hole look and finally managed to pull off such a natural wink in front of the camera, so I quickly picked two raw photos to share. When shooting other characters in the past, whenever I tried to close one eye, either the other eye squinted along or my facial muscles stiffened like a cramp. After practicing in the mirror for quite a while, I finally found the trick—placing the focus on the lower eyelid while gently letting the upper eyelid rest, combined with a slight head tilt, which made the result look much softer.

Let's talk about the overall concept first. The Rabbit Hole styling itself has plenty of playful elements. The blue-and-pink gradient short wig truly tested the stylist's skill—the curvature of the bangs and side locks had to cover part of the eyebrows just right without obscuring the gaze. The white rabbit ears on top, paired with the mini pink bunny charm and side black bow, create a striking color contrast reminiscent of a playful Bunny girl. The black cross sticker on the forehead is the finishing touch, shifting the head's visual center slightly to the left to form a diagonal balance with the small red teardrop makeup beneath the right eye. For makeup, the base was kept very clean, with peach-pink blush swept generously over the apples of the cheeks. The eye makeup used a light pink base with pearlescent highlighter on the aegyo sal, naturally enlarging the eyes. The contact lenses were bright blue, matching the wig's blue palette with higher luminosity for a crystal-clear gaze.

For the outfit, the oversized red bow tie and white collar are classic pairings, while the glossy black patent leather camisole reflected interwoven pink and blue lines under the bar's neon lights, boasting a fantastic texture. The black-and-white checkered patch on the chest was actually a makeshift prop made from cardboard, yet it looked surprisingly cohesive clipped into the straps. The wrist accessories are the essence of this look: the pink handcuffs and silver chains added a playful yet rebellious vibe, chiming crisply as the metal clinked. During shooting, I kept shaking my wrists so the chains swung along different trajectories. The armbands are matte black metal, fitted snugly around the arms to accentuate the arm lines.

We chose to shoot on location in front of a bar counter, using neon light tubes as the primary light source. Pink and blue lights refracted across the glass liquor bottles to create mottled patterns, with the staggered bottles in the background adding rich depth to this Neon night photography. To avoid messy reflections, I deliberately turned my face toward the light source, illuminating the left side evenly while casting soft shadows on the right, which sculpted clear facial dimension. The first photo is a medium close-up, with my right index finger resting lightly against my jaw; when winking, I subconsciously curled the corner of my mouth, showing a hint of teeth for a livelier expression. The second photo has both hands placed against my chest with fingers slightly spread over the fabric, focusing attention on the fingers and bow tie, though the framing is slightly tighter and lowers the visual weight. Overall, the first photo has stronger facial expressiveness and eye contact, plus a more relaxed pose with extended arm lines, making it the ideal cover choice.

The trickiest part of this shoot was controlling the wig's glare—the blue-and-pink strands caught harsh highlights under the neon lights, creating white glare spots at slight angle shifts. Later, the photographer used a softbox from the side to cast warm fill light, suppressing the harsh sheen to achieve this soft, smooth hair texture. Additionally, the handcuff chains tended to obstruct the chest patch, requiring repeated adjustments to let them drape naturally along the outside of the arms. Although many shots were discarded, these two photos capturing the wink moment completely met expectations. Without excessive post-processing, authentic skin textures and lighting transitions were preserved, providing the raw on-site feel that Hatsune Miku cosplay should have.

In terms of prop preparation, besides headwear and handcuffs, I brought spare adhesive tape to prevent stickers from peeling off—which proved essential since sweat causes sticker edges to curl. The overall color grading leans toward a cyberpunk pink-purple palette with subtle film grain to enhance the club vibe in this Neon night photography set. During the shoot, I also improvised a few chin-resting and peace-sign poses, but felt the wink shot best captured the playful, mysterious essence of Rabbit Hole. Lastly, despite having many accessories, this outfit was very easy to move around in, unlike voluminous skirts that require constant vigilance against tripping. If I shoot this again, I'll try more continuous dynamic bursts—like head tosses or spins to let the wig flutter—which I believe will yield even cooler shots for this Hatsune Miku cosplay.
