Shooting this poolside swimsuit styling for Furina from Genshin Impact took a great deal of thought and effort. Anyone familiar with me knows that my natural frame and height have very little to do with the word 'petite'—in fact, you could say I'm quite tall and broad-shouldered. However, Furina inherently embodies an innocent, airy, and delicate charm. Especially when slipping into this pale-toned swimsuit featuring a sailor collar paired with a swim ring, shooting in my usual posture would easily make me look far too mature. Therefore, figuring out how to photograph myself looking petite and doll-like truly racked my brain.
First, in terms of styling and wardrobe coordination: I chose high-waisted denim shorts, which visually raise the waistline and elongate lower-body proportions, while the white sailor-collared top and large blue chest ribbon balance it out with youthful, playful whimsy. The semi-translucent ruffled leg warmers (Stockings) around my calves were crucial; this material adds visual volume to the lower legs, which, paired with star sandals, lends the legs a softer, rounder, and fuller curve rather than a mature, slender bony look. Regarding the wig, I specifically trimmed the front bangs to cover part of my forehead, combined with that prominent cowlick (ahoge) atop the crown, effectively shortening the perceived face length to enhance a youthful, doll-like appearance. For the makeup, instead of elongating my eye shape, I emphasized bright blue contact lenses paired with generous blush washed across the apples of my cheeks to simulate the flushed, rosy glow of a healthy child.
This shoot took place at the Changsha ACC Anime Expo venue, where the lighting conditions were quite tricky with heavy overhead lighting. To match Furina's Hydro element ambiance, photographer @Yanhuo added fine, glowing blue particle effects in post-processing. While shooting these Convention photos, I sat on the blue-and-white transparent swim ring, lowering my center of gravity as much as possible by leaning forward or curling up slightly. This pose helps shrink overall bodily volume. I explored crossing my hands, tapping my forehead with one finger, and even making little kitten-paw gestures—all postures designed to sell that 'petite' visual illusion. In reality, each postural adjustment required recalibrating my balance, as stepping on an inflatable swim ring in heeled sandals is no easy feat.
Capturing sheer, translucent materials under harsh lighting is notoriously difficult, as details easily blur together into a blown-out mess. We tested multiple angles, ultimately tweaking camera ISO alongside localized post-exposure highlights to preserve the blue ribbon details on the leg warmers and their watery, rippling sheen. The outfit felt a bit chilly inside the air-conditioned convention hall, but for the sake of good photos, one has to push through environmental challenges. After each set, I immediately neatened my clothes and wig to ensure continuity across every shot.
Successfully bringing out this alternative side of Furina relied on thoughtful outfit coordination beforehand, dialed-in makeup styling, and constant pose adjustments on site. Despite my actual height, harmonizing garment proportions with deliberate camera angles achieved the desired 'petite' effect. Seeing that airy, lighthearted grace in the final selects made all the preparation worthwhile in this Anime-style photography experience.
