These Anime convention photos feature Flandre Scarlet Cosplay from Touhou Project. The core outfit is that dark red dress. The gown features a corseted waistline with dense tiers of white lace across the outer layer; to support that arc of Colorful crystal rings on my back, I had to wear a rigid supportive harness inside the dress. The crystal rings were assembled separately with every crystal secured in place; once fully mounted, the weight was quite substantial, leaving my shoulders noticeably sore after standing for long stretches.
The secondary styling piece was the white over-the-knee stockings (White stockings)—lightweight and breathable, adorned with tiny lace florals, trimmed with tassels and small red ribbon bows, visually brightening the entire dark ensemble. The shoes were red glossy chunky heels, somewhat easier to walk in than expected, though holding full-body standing poses still put considerable pressure on the balls of my feet.
In terms of styling, the hairstyle featured long golden-blonde curls topped with a white mob cap bonnet decorated with a large red blossom and lace trimming. I wore red contact lenses paired with prominent red eye makeup to ensure my eyes looked spirited before the camera. The Anime convention hall had cluttered lighting with numerous overhead lamps; when hit by highlights, the red lenses gleamed intensely. For cosmetic choices, since red eyeshadow can easily make eyelids look puffy, I deliberately deepened the outer corners. The wig was a warm light gold, with the curls at the ends styled with a curling iron the day before.
Before shooting, I prepared a black teddy bear plushie and a faux apple as props. Holding them in front of my chest or cradling them in one hand nicely resolved the awkward dilemma of not knowing where to place my hands. In particular, the pose holding up the apple, paired with a slight head tilt looking into the lens, was rich in atmospheric tension. The photographer also coached me on a one-leg lifted pose; I was shaky at first, but soon found my center of gravity. The leg lines framed in White stockings stood out sharply in these full-body shots, making for effortlessly photogenic frames.
The outfit felt quite constrictive because the waist corset was tied tightly, preventing deep breaths. The dress also occupied a large footprint, making me worried about stepping on the skirt hem amidst the crowd. Yet, these inconveniences were entirely bearable given the finished results, as this crimson-based Lolita dress stood out prominently against poster walls and exhibition booths. The seven Colorful crystal rods on my back spanned red, orange, yellow, green, cyan, blue, and purple—strikingly eye-catching, yet prone to bumping passersby while walking, so I had to navigate sideways. During full-body shots, the photographer had me stand slightly on tiptoes to elongate leg proportions. The white lace trimming showed crisp clarity under the convention overhead lights. To keep the skirt silhouette from looking flat, I layered a petticoat underneath to maximize volume.
Once the full styling was complete and props were in place, the captured visual quality exceeded expectations with high color saturation. I carefully controlled my expressions in every frame, maintaining a balance between sweetness and eerie mystique.
Due to the massive crowds at the Anime convention, with backgrounds filled with booths and pedestrians, the photographer specifically chose an open spot with even lighting, using a wide-aperture telephoto lens to melt the background into round bokeh orbs and isolate the subject cleanly. Styling took about an hour and a half, mostly spent trimming the wig and adjusting the mob cap position. The red skirt hem and white lace displayed fine texture in the light, and holding the red apple echoed the dress's color beautifully. A valuable takeaway from this shoot was putting on shoes before the dress, or the waist would get awkwardly stuck. Glancing through the final shots, the overall result was immensely satisfying.
