[Tatara Kogasa Cosplay] Night Walk in the Woods from Touhou Project, The Forgotten Youkai Girl

The massive umbrella pieced together in red, blue, and white colors blocks more than half of my face, and through the lens, it feels as if one can hear that lighthearted teasing phrase. This time I bring a night shoot cosplay photoshoot of Tatara Kogasa from Touhou Project, with the theme positioned as the forgotten Kogasa wandering through the dark and dense forest.

First, let's talk about the detail reproduction of this costume. The main dress is a highly recognizable light blue cross-laced vest, paired inside with a pure white lace ruffled flare-sleeve top. The clothing has a strong sense of layering, especially the ruffle treatments on the cuffs and skirt hem, which look exceptionally soft under the dim fill light. The lower body is paired with traditional wooden clogs featuring red straps. To stand firmly on the stone steps covered with moss and pebbles, we spent quite a bit of time adjusting the center of gravity and standing angles before shooting. The texture of this footwear forms a sharp material contrast with the soft fabric, beautifully fitting the character's temperament.

The largest prop in this work is this huge umbrella in my hand. The umbrella ribs utilize red, white, and blue colors for piecing together, and the umbrella surface carries a texture of a Japanese-style paper umbrella. What leaves the deepest impression is that extremely long red fabric hanging down from the edge of the umbrella. This long red cloth was very heavy in actual operation; every time I wanted to wave it or perform a turning movement, it would pull at my center of gravity. To present its natural drape and the feeling of it fluttering with the wind in front of the lens, we repeatedly tried several rounds of positioning and swinging movements.

Regarding the makeup design, we intentionally abandoned some conventional sweet embellishments, turning instead to a large amount of brightening facial base makeup, striving to present a slightly pale and translucent skin texture. Combined with highly saturated red pupil contact lenses and a dark red lip color, we attempted to form a powerful visual impact in a cool-toned environment. This kind of makeup can effectively suppress complex ambient light, ensuring that facial focus is not lost during post-processing adjustments.

Let's talk about the environment and post-processing of this shoot. The location was a relatively dark outdoor forest park paved with simple stone step paths. Due to the dense surrounding trees, the ambient light was mainly a faint blue light filtering through the gaps between the leaves. Shooting relied heavily on the continuous light source constructed by the photographer, using a cool-toned fill light to outline my silhouette. White sleeves and lace edges are extremely prone to overexposure in dark-toned scenes, and controlling the exposure requires strong on-site management skills. The photographer also intentionally reserved a large amount of space in the viewfinder for post-processing to handle. During the post-processing stage, we overlaid floating eerie blue ghost fire special effects onto the frame and adjusted the placement of the ghost fires according to the postures of different frames, attempting to create an unrealistic, supernatural atmosphere to make the originally dim woods come alive through this Anime-style photography session.

On the presentation of postures, we experimented with different states such as squatting next to the red cloth, standing on one leg waving the massive umbrella, and leaning against the umbrella shaft with a hand propping up the chin. The character of Tatara Kogasa inherently carries a quirky and playful vibe, so I intentionally made subtle adjustments to my gaze and expressions, such as slightly opening my mouth or keeping a blank stare while gazing into the lens, to capture that innocent yet slightly eerie contrast. The night temperature during the shoot was relatively low, and although the shooting process was hard work, seeing the final output effect brought a full sense of achievement. Because the work itself does not need to be rigidly bound to the original setting's scene atmosphere, reshaping another side of the character through an environment completely detached from daily life is precisely one of the charms brought by cosplay.
