The photo return from Firefly ACG Expo Day 1 is finally organized; the afternoon light was genuinely ideal for shooting in widescreen landscape orientation. I wore a Maid outfit from Starry Night Magic Shop. To capture the presence of the Perfect Head Maid, I specially prepared multiple throwing dagger props, paired with a silver-white wig and hair accessories. The overall blue-and-white color palette of the dress resonated harmoniously with the livery of this on-site Itasha (Touhou Project, Sakuya Izayoi cosplay).
Posing and interacting throughout the afternoon was honestly quite a test of endurance—holding dynamic battle stances continuously while managing facial expressions. Especially when handling the daggers, hands had to stay rock-steady with a piercing, focused gaze. Thanks to the photographer's patient direction and the fantastic Itasha scene provided by the car owner, the blue geometric decals and anime wrap on the car echoed my costume beautifully. We experimented with different compositions near the wheels and doors. To accentuate slender leg lines and the rich layers of the skirt, I deliberately adjusted my posture and thigh-ring position; pairing white stockings with Mary Jane shoes also added points to this ensemble. When shooting in landscape, balancing negative space is vital, positioning the subject strategically so both the Itasha and character shine together.
With crowds flowing constantly across the convention, getting so many satisfying shots beside such a cool Itasha was thrilling. While this Maid outfit features numerous layers, it has incredible texture; the lace frills along the hem and apron details are exquisitely crafted, looking stunning under exhibition hall lighting. Though the throwing daggers are plastic props, posing with them in hand felt remarkably natural. Despite bright afternoon illumination inside the venue, the background was somewhat cluttered; to make the subject and Itasha livery stand out, we tested multiple angles to crop out passing crowds. The greatest advantage of landscape orientation is capturing the full character wrap along the car side while making character proportions look more statuesque across the wide frame.
Midway through the session, we met numerous fellow Touhou Project fans who came over for souvenir photos in front of the Itasha, creating a wonderful camaraderie. Portraying the Head Maid this time, the makeup accentuated subtle blue tones around the eyes to pair with silver-white braided locks, keeping the overall silhouette crisp and neat. The skirt puff was balanced, and trimmed with white lace, it generated fluid dynamic motion during both movement and posed shots. Holding dual daggers while managing necklaces and accessories required frequent readjustment of hand placement to keep the postures organic and unforced.
Entering in the afternoon meant a tighter schedule, so we pre-planned several essential camera setups. From crouching to standing, to framing vehicular contour lines in the foreground, every shutter click explored distinct compositional tension. Standing for hours in heels left my feet aching, but reviewing the landscape footage on the monitor made every effort feel totally worthwhile. This look features intricate details—from the green bow at the collar to the waist corset and hem lace—demanding constant grooming to keep every element immaculate.
All in all, this experience at Firefly ACG Expo was thoroughly enriching—not only walking away with satisfying widescreen photos, but also enjoying a delightful collaboration with the generous Itasha owner.
