The concept for this Halloween original design actually started preparations a month ago. When mentioning Kaguya-hime, everyone's first reaction might be a very gorgeous, traditional or pure anime-style look. But this time I wanted to try something a bit different by combining Halloween witch elements with Kaguya-hime. The purple-and-orange color-blocking is actually a quite bold attempt; this color scheme is hard to pull off in daily life, but under specific lighting and scenes, it unexpectedly creates a wonderful chemical reaction.
To tone down the quirkiness of this outfit, I deliberately chose a dark gray wide-brimmed pointed witch hat adorned with black lace decorations, adding a touch of dark atmosphere. Long golden hair is Kaguya-hime's standard; for the wig, I chose a brighter-colored style, paired with red contact lenses, which created an extremely strong visual impact against the red velvet curtain background. In terms of makeup, the focus was placed on the eyes, slightly deepening the depth of the outer corners to carry a slight vampire-like pallor, while the lipstick shade was chosen to be a bit more vibrant to neutralize the overall dark style.
Collaborating with photographer Cheng Qi this time was extremely pleasant. We put a lot of thought into scene arrangement, aiming for that vintage, mysterious, and slightly mischievous Halloween atmosphere. The red velvet curtain served as the base, paired with dark wood vintage carved furniture. The props can be said to be very rich: a skull-shaped candelabra, a black vintage lantern, distressed books, and a huge black cross standing on the left. On the right, a golden vintage floor lamp, red rose vines, and a black crow model were placed; these small details enriched the frame significantly, bringing out the storytelling instantly.
During the shoot, the pose direction was also quite particular. For the first close-up set, we shot the legs, pairing Mary Jane shoes with white stockings to showcase the outfit's details. For the second set, holding a purple magic book while resting the chin on the hand in thought, trying to evoke the feeling of a witch secretly studying magic in an old castle. For the third set, putting the legs right on the edge of the cabinet and sinking into the sofa presented a lazy yet somewhat in-control posture. Books are actually a great interactive prop, allowing natural hand movements so as not to sit there stiffly.
This original design did not strictly adhere to the original setting, but instead integrated Halloween witch elements quite well. The costume's material had a great texture under warm-toned lighting, and the pleats and lace trims on the dress were illuminated with great layering. From costume selection and prop preparation to scene construction, a lot of thought went into every single step. I hope everyone likes this different style attempt.
