Our photoshoot for the 2026 Port District Midsummer Cooling Festival wrapped up seamlessly. This session brought Chien Wu from Azur Lane to life, a project that took roughly a month of meticulous preparation. Seeing the finalized shots, the visual presentation completely met my expectations, and there are many behind-the-scenes nuances from the shoot I'd love to share.
First, the styling and wardrobe: the costume design is remarkably sharp and agile, featuring a white cropped off-the-shoulder top paired with black shorts, anchored by slender black cord straps connecting the top to a choker around the neck. The choker features serrated edging with a black spider pendant dangling at the center, echoing the white spider-web motif printed along the side of the shorts to form a cohesive arachnid aesthetic. To mirror the character's temperament, the wig was styled as a shoulder-length blunt black bob with straight fringe, accented by two silver hairpins on the left. For makeup, crimson contact lenses were paired with reddish-brown eye shadow deepening the outer corners to give my gaze an assertive, focused edge before the lens, finished with vivid red lipstick that lifted the entire complexion.
The set was built inside a photography studio, anchored primarily by a backdrop board depicting a tropical beach with coconut palms, framed by a luminous white illuminated edge. Blue-and-white stepped platforms covered the floor, peppered with warm-yellow fairy lights. Blending this cool-toned backdrop with warm accent lighting kept the frame clean while establishing clear dimensional depth. To complement the summer coolness theme, the photographer dialed up key illumination on my silhouette, preventing excessive background brightness from clipping the subject's contours.
In terms of posing, I explored several varied stances on set. Because the cropped off-the-shoulder cut exposes the midriff, I relied on postures that elongated bodily lines to keep framing dynamic—crossing my legs seated on the steps, reclining sideways on the platform with one hand braced against the floor, or crossing my legs atop a tall barstool. Certain poses involved gently tugging the top's hem to highlight the waistline, which required ongoing adjustments during takes to ensure natural, flattering fabric folds. The pale yellow plush chick toy, originally just background decor, made a wonderful handheld prop that balanced the outfit's sharpness and grounded the breezy seaside atmosphere. In seated postures, dropping my center of gravity helped extend leg lines cleanly.
As a frequent cosplayer, I was thoroughly satisfied with how this outfit flattered bodily contours, particularly around the waist and midriff. Given the minimal fabric, shifting poses demanded vigilance against wardrobe slips, so I continuously monitored garment alignment between takes while touching up powder. In the final captures, the chiaroscuro sculpted sharp outlines and natural expressions across both standing and seated angles. From styling and lighting to posing direction, the coordination was effortless. This Chien Wu look captured everything I envisioned, and I hope to meet everyone in person at upcoming offline gatherings.
