[Cheshire Cosplay] Azur Lane's Oath Bride: Convention Photo Record

Having received this newly made oath bride look at the Firefly ACG Expo, I quickly recorded these Cosplay convention photos during a break in the shoot. The combination of blue and silver-white looks surprisingly clean in this gray-toned venue environment, especially with the pure white lace and transparent tulle layered together, plus the light blue gradient transition on the outer layer, allowing the entire skirt hem to present delicate color levels from different angles. Actually, the hardest part of this costume to handle is the tulle of the lower hem. Although the tulle is light, it also has a strong drape. When walking, the tulle will float, and if the amplitude is too large, it is not only easy to step on the skirt hem but also easily get tangled with the train behind. Therefore, it places a high demand on movement control during shooting, and I could only try my best to keep the upper body extended, letting the skirt hem naturally disperse following my leg-raising posture.

The photographer used an a7c2 paired with a 35gm lens. This focal length is highly practical in cramped environments like anime conventions, as it can highlight the fine details of the character and costume at close range, while using the edge stretching to showcase the tension of the entire skirt hem. When shooting these frames, the photographer deliberately placed the camera very low, using a low-angle shot to visually elongate the legs' proportions. Combined with side-backlighting, the veil and outer tulle skirt both revealed a faint halo, instantly bringing out that dreamlike atmosphere.

The makeup this time was generally soft. I didn't apply particularly heavy eyeshadow or emphasize exaggerated blush, but instead focused on the echo between the eyeliner and the blue circle lenses. Combined with the silver-gray base and cyan-highlighted hair color, as well as those highly stylized white cat-ear ornaments, the texture under the lights was quite translucent and dewy, matching the wedding dress theme perfectly.

The convention floor was actually very crowded with people coming and going, leaving passersby everywhere in the background, but the photographer utilized the shallow depth of field from the large aperture to blur the lights and crowds behind into bokeh, preserving only the sharp parts of the main subject. In terms of basic lighting setup, there should be a layer of soft light shining simultaneously from slightly above and in front, which not only ensured a soft facial light but also illuminated the lace embroidery details on the gown exceptionally clearly, while preserving the natural airy feel of the wig.

To capture the desired effect of this set, we really adjusted the details back and forth many times. For instance, those two wide sleeve covers do not fit the arms tightly and easily create wrinkles; once wrinkles appear in the captured frames, the neat and elegant feel of the entire look is heavily compromised. Then there is the choker—that light blue choker is crucial at the collar, as it needs to sit close to the skin to reveal the collarbones without being too tight to affect head turns and posing movements. Additionally, when shooting, considering the shape changes of the skirt tulle during movement, the poses I selected were a slightly suspended sitting pose and a single-foot standing pose. The former used the weight of the falling skirt hem to drag out a beautiful curve, while also revealing the leg lines and exquisite high heels, whereas the latter, coordinated with the bouquet in hand, captured that dynamic moment of the skirt hem being lifted by the wind.

When walking and raising my leg, the naturally flowing lightweight texture of the tulle skirt, embellished with ice blue, is arguably the most outstanding detail of this outfit. Because these are Cosplay convention photos rather than a studio shoot, there weren't as many perfect light-controlling devices like softboxes or reflectors, so the hardness and direction of the light were sometimes not quite as desired. Fortunately, the light on the convention floor was relatively natural. Using the 35gm prime lens on-site required me to constantly adjust my standing position, controlling the distance and angle with the photographer to find the best perspective ratio and avoid character distortion or inadequate focal length. After setting the pose, I also had to repeatedly tidy up the tulle skirt and sleeve covers behind me, striving to keep every single detail looking clean and sharp in the lens.

During this outdoor shoot, I actually met many fellow fans in the exhibition, with many people helping to hold lights or making space to facilitate our shooting. As a coser who is accustomed to dedicating heart and soul to preparing an outfit and restoring the character's temperament, being able to calm down and record the results of my dressing with the lens in such a lively exhibition is inherently a highly fulfilling thing. For me, the meaning of photography perhaps does not lie in pursuing absolute perfection, but in capturing that state of being immersed in the character during the exchange with fellow fans. Looking back at this set of photos, the transparency of the light hitting the white clothes and the lightweight texture of the tulle skirt are both expressed exceptionally well. Although there are still some very small regrets—for example, the wrist ornaments could be coordinated more exquisitely, or the edges at the bottom of the tulle skirt could be decorated with a few more pearlescent sequins—the overall visual effect presented is clean and refreshing, proving that the dedicated preparation of this costume was not in vain.
