Azur Lane's Iron Blood faction member, Elbe! This time, I brought her default skin outfit to meet everyone at the Shanghai CPSP convention.
As a cosplayer, to perfectly recreate the textured aesthetic of the Iron Blood faction, the fabric materials and details are of utmost importance. This time, I chose a glossy black leather fabric, paired with white ruffles on the inner layer and dual-layered red and black long ribbons on the hem, maximizing the visual texture under the convention lights. The black long tie adorned with rhinestones on the chest is the crowning touch. Combined with the stiff white lining of the collar, it retains the sharp look of a naval commander while incorporating elements of casual design.
The headwear was the most challenging part to style. The black patent leather military cap features a striking silver anchor emblem right in the center, with a metal chain and woven rope intertwined above the brim. To match Elbe's personality, I intentionally added a black bow decoration on the side, adding a touch of girlish playfulness to this sharp military uniform cosplay.
For makeup, to complement the silvery-white long curly hair and cool-toned outfit, I opted for a cooler pale foundation paired with purplish-red contact lenses and thick upper and lower eyelashes. The red lip makeup emphasizes the contours of the lips. This makeup style retains the three-dimensionality of my facial features even under the intense camera flashes at the convention, avoiding being washed out by the lights.
The venue on the day of the shoot featured the standard industrial-style concrete flooring of large Shanghai exhibition halls. The high ceilings and bright rows of lights created a very strong backlighting effect. The photographer was excellent at utilizing these on-site light sources, especially using the rim lighting to outline golden contours along the strands of hair and the edge of the hat, making the black-and-white outfit look even more premium in the dark-toned scene.
I experimented with several different visual perspectives for the shots this time. The first close-up captured hand movements and eye contact, using fingertips lightly touching the cheek to increase the sense of interaction. The subsequent sitting and kneeling poses intentionally showcased the fluffiness of the skirt and the details of the patent leather over-the-knee boots. In particular, the criss-cross laces on the boots and the thigh straps, paired with the cascading red and black ribbons, maximized the visual depth. This should perfectly cater to the aesthetic standards of you "uniform-loving commanders," right?
On-site, for the authenticity of this default skin, I also prepared matching black leather gloves. The design of hand movements is crucial for conveying character personality; a posture with one hand holding the hat brim while slightly saluting retains the unique coolness of the Iron Blood faction without being overly rigid. The action of drawing in the skirt and slightly bringing the legs together while sitting amplified the girlish charm. That state of being cool yet a little proud was exactly the trait I wanted to express through this character.
Honestly, every time I cosplay a character with stiff, structured materials, it is a test of stamina and expression management. Wearing non-breathable patent leather and layers of ruffles in the summer, combined with the indoor stuffiness, makes it very easy to sweat and ruin the makeup, so setting the makeup and oil control had to be done very meticulously. But seeing the gloss and dimensionality captured in the raw photos made every bit of effort worthwhile.
To all the commanders of Azur Lane, how do you like this Iron Blood default skin look? I am already preparing for future faction projects. Whether I will choose another Iron Blood member, or characters from Eagle Union or Sakura Empire, I'll leave that as a suspense for now. However, one thing is for sure: the next costume and prop setup will maintain the same high standard of quality, bringing you more wonderful recreations of default skins and outfits. As a professional cosplayer, I really enjoy the process of sharing the charm of characters up close with everyone at conventions. With this session of Shanghai CPSP coming to an end, I am also sorting through more convention photos and behind-the-scenes footage, hoping to let you feel my understanding and passion for the character through this set of works.
