[Cartethyia Cosplay] An Elf Girl Under High-Key Light and Shadow in a White Studio

The purity of a white studio is often the best test for the completion of a cosplay costume and makeup. For this free-collaboration shoot with photographer Pulao411, we chose the cleanest white background to recreate the character's highly layered elf outfit.

When putting on this Cosplay outfit, the first thing I felt was its light yet complex texture. The black dress serves as the overall foundation, and its matte fabric, paired with the exquisite metal cross buckles at the collar, presents a premium, structured feel under the studio lights. The most eye-catching visual element, without a doubt, is the blue-and-white gradient ribbons wrapping around my body. These large areas of fabric, printed with golden starbursts and line patterns, look incredibly flowing when standing still, but they also highly test the range of movement during shooting. To present the dynamic motion of the fabric flying in front of the lens, I kept adjusting the twist of my arms and body while standing. Working with the dynamic moments captured by the photographer, we finally got those finished shots with the ribbons spread open.

For the head makeup and styling, the long straight golden hair paired with water-blue circle lenses added a touch of cool aloofness to my face. Those pink elf ears had to be securely attached to my earlobes using glue; during the shoot, to maintain comfort, I had to constantly pay attention to their position to prevent them from deforming. The blue thorn-like crown on my head, paired with the crescent-shaped center ornament, perfectly locked in the character's mysterious temperament. The tiny tassels and golden pendants hanging on my body, though small, made soft clinking sounds as I moved, adding a lot of immersion to the shoot.

What was quite challenging was the pair of transparent acrylic chunky-heeled sandals on my feet. While they visually elongated my leg lines tremendously and were key to improving my body proportions for this Cosplay outfit, they were not only heavy but also had highly slippery soles. To strike appropriate poses on the white pedestal and maintain my balance, I had to tighten my core, which also gave some of the standing poses a natural, upright posture in the photos. Fortunately, Pulao411 excels at capturing the subject's expressions. In several sitting shots, I was able to sit somewhat relaxedly on the plush floor mat, with my fingers casually brushing through my hair, presenting a completely different relaxed vibe compared to standing.

Regarding the light and shadow, the advantage of white studio photography lies in its ability to embrace color contrasts. The character's own color palette is primarily black, white, and blue. Under the soft high-key lighting, my base makeup and the wig's luster looked exceptionally clear and radiant. Without a cluttered background, the audience's eyes naturally focus on the cut of the dress, the stitching details of the fabric, and the character's body language. This shoot can be described as a process of polishing details—from the initial light-testing to adjusting the swinging frequency of the ribbons, and then to managing the emotions, everything went incredibly smoothly.

A lot of effort went into preparing this elf ear makeup and styling and the costume, especially the design of the gradient ribbons and the sewing of the metal buckles, which greatly enhanced the character's accuracy.
