As soon as we wrapped up this Laffey cosplay shoot from Azur Lane, I couldn't wait to share it! During the pre-production stage, I put a lot of thought into recreating the character's signature lazy yet adorably dazed aura.
Let's start with hair and makeup: the wig is long, straight, and silver-white. Trimming the bangs was crucial—too thick makes it look heavy, while too thin lacks that distinct 2D anime translucency. I let the fringe lightly graze the eyebrows, which, paired with dewy red contact lenses (a classic White-haired red-eyed cosplay combination), instantly gave my eyes that innocent "bunny-eye" look. For eye makeup, I slightly accentuated the lower lashes, extended the outer corners, and blended generous pink blush under the eyes to create a cute, "just woke up with slightly flushed cheeks" effect. For the lips, I chose a dewy nude-pink gloss to keep the overall face soft.
For the costume, a blue-and-white sailor-style top served as the base, edged with scalloped white lace trims, with the neckline flattering the collarbones for a refreshing look. The thin white choker around the neck is a vital styling element; it couldn't be tied too loose, needing to form a clean V-shape with the little green-leafed carrot pendant resting steadily right in the center. Though a small accessory, it served as a key visual highlight for the entire ensemble.
Controlling details during the shoot was equally important. Because the character features long, white drooping bunny ears (a staple of Bunny girl cosplay), I spent quite a while adjusting their angle so they would drape naturally on both sides of my cheeks—framing the face contours without obstructing too much costume detail. The blue headpiece on top is a semi-hoop structure; securing it was technically tricky, but through repeated adjustments, I found the optimal position so it gave a rounded head shape from the front.
The final photos were shot in a very clean, soft lighting setup, maximizing the silky texture of the wig and the sheer translucency of the base makeup without complex backgrounds stealing the focus. The visual emphasis rested entirely on facial expressions and the intricate design details of this bunny look. Clean close-up portraits like these best showcase solid hair and makeup craftsmanship—standing up to lens scrutiny while capturing the character's essence.
Although this set consists of close-up portraits, it fairly comprehensively reflects my interpretation of Laffey from Azur Lane. The true joy of cosplay lies not only in recreating the attire but also in immersing oneself into the character's inner temperament. Because Laffey is inherently a 2D Moe style character infused with bunny motifs, I strove throughout the shoot to maintain that relaxed, subtly confused cuteness.
Every cosplay feels like a brand-new adventure: from prepping wigs and tuning makeup to adjusting accessories and delivering on-camera expressions, each step requires immense patience. The bunny ear elements, though bulky, become a major styling asset when properly secured. The carrot charm on the neck functions as a reliable visual anchor whether viewed straight on or at a slight angle.
