The theme for this studio shoot was an original concept design for Ram, with a focus on conveying a lightweight, dynamic effect. Since everyone is familiar with her standard look in Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-, I deliberately avoided her traditional hairstyle and outfit this time, choosing a pink-and-white concept costume I designed myself, hoping to discover another layer of the character's charm through different expressive techniques and movements.
The costume details are quite intricate. A white inner shirt combined with a pink corset outlines the upper body silhouette. My favorite part is the detached flare sleeve design; this sleeve treatment creates a wonderful air rhythm when raising and waving my arms. The multi-layered ruffled tutu skirt uses lightweight chiffon fabric, paired with white over-the-knee lace stockings and a pair of pink Mary Jane heels adorned with bows, creating a very clean color palette. A bright Pink wig with a short cut was chosen for the hair, paired with fluffy white Animal ear style accessories and a detachable tail, giving the overall look a youthful and playful aura.
To convey a sense of motion, we didn't take static, standing poses during the shoot. In the first and third photos, you can see me standing on one leg leaning forward or looking back. This single-leg standing pose combined with extended limbs heavily tests core strength and balance. We spent a lot of time finding our center of gravity during shooting, because with only one leg supporting the body once it tilts, shaking easily occurs. To capture that suspended-in-air feeling as if blown up by a gust of wind requires not only proper force application, but also exceptionally precise snapshot timing. The moment the shutter clicked, I deliberately relaxed my shoulder and back muscles, letting my head and shoulders drop or lean back naturally with the movement, striving for an un-stiff pose.
As for lighting setup, the pure gray background was very accommodating, avoiding color and environmental distractions to focus all visual attention on the pink-and-white ensemble. Soft front-side light ensured costume details were perfectly showcased without harsh shadows. The turnaround snapshot in the third photo especially, with the pet tail combined with a post-processed halo effect, filled the visual blank when twisting the body, looking very ethereal.
As a photography enthusiast and cosplayer, I'm very satisfied with this original concept interpretation. Although the costume design didn't copy the character's original look, the iconic pink elements, Animal ear style pairing, and classic white stockings easily evoke the character herself. In our creative process, we didn't stick strictly to the script's setting, but expressed another possibility of the character through our body language. Although the shooting process was tiring—standing on one leg even in high heels tests the stability of feet and ankles—seeing those lively, jumping moments frozen in time brings a real sense of accomplishment.
The choice of costume materials allowed me to move with ease. Though the skirt has many layers, its lightweight material creates a beautiful arc as the body spins. The detached sleeves don't restrict arm movement either, echoing hand gestures nicely. As an original design work, I feel it preserves a love for the original character while incorporating unique aesthetic understanding, making the creative process itself immensely enjoyable.
This Dynamic studio photography experience gave me a deeper grasp of dynamic imagery. Soft lighting paired with a simple background proved that high visual impact photos can still be taken even in highly compressed scenes, making it a shoot well worth reviewing. Overall, I personally love the lightheartedness of these final shots, seamlessly blending hardcore studio shooting with lively body expression.
