This time, I shot this pink-haired angel look of NIKKE Dorothy. The set and costumes for the entire photo set leaned toward a dreamlike and lightweight direction. I had high expectations for this costume, makeup, and props before the shoot, and after the photos came out, I found that it indeed perfectly matches the traits of this character.
Let's talk about the costume first. The upper body of this outfit is made of a pearlescent pink fabric, with a white-and-pink gradient texture on the chest, resembling clouds or marshmallows in texture. The neckline is connected to a choker, and the chest features a halter design with drawstrings. Combined with the white criss-cross lacings at the waist, it visually tightens the waist and beautifully highlights the body proportions. The cuffs feature very large white ruffled lace with a strong sense of layering, and the hem is also a fluffy miniskirt style. Together with the large petticoat underneath, the volume of the entire lower body is extremely full.
A relatively big challenge was actually that pair of white feather angel wings on my back. Although visually stunning and a perfect touch for the character's angel attribute, during the actual shoot, the weight of the wings and their restriction on my movements required me to be extremely mindful of my center of gravity balance when posing. Sitting down with the wings or doing a turning motion to make the skirt fly required repeatedly adjusting angles; otherwise, it would look stiff or unstable.
This pink wig is also a highlight of this look. Honestly, to match the pink hair, I spent a long time choosing the eye color and finally went with light blue. This contrast of warm and cool tones makes the whole person look much brighter and more agile. A white flower is worn on one side of the wig, along with cascading pearl chains, which adds decorative details to the otherwise plain pink hair without being too heavy, matching the sweet style of the dress perfectly.
The shooting venue was a pure white indoor style, featuring a white grand piano, white sheer curtains in the background, a floor covered with white faux flowers, and pink heart-shaped balloons, making the overall atmosphere very clear and translucent. The photographer, Heishou, is excellent at capturing this high-key, bright atmosphere and added a lot of enhancements to the scene with the lighting layout. To highlight the visual effect of the stockings and high heels, we chose many angles to showcase the leg lines. This pair of pink chunky-heeled platform shoes was very stable to stand in on the white plush carpet, but walking around still required caution, and I had to adjust my footing on the soft carpet many times during the shoot.
Regarding the glamorous or alluring parts, the costume itself has a certain amount of skin exposure. Combined with the pure white over-the-knee stockings and pink high heels, it definitely elongates the leg proportions visually. Moreover, since the skirt hem itself is quite short, with the help of the large petticoat, it's very easy to produce those agile and subtly sexy shots when sitting down or leaning slightly against the piano. When shooting the third dynamic photo where I lift the skirt, because the skirt swung wide and combined with the blur effect of the foreground heart-shaped balloons, the result turned out highly energetic. However, to capture that exact moment of the flying skirt, we had to shoot repeatedly many times before catching a satisfying one.
For the makeup, I intentionally emphasized the details of the eye makeup, using a clear eyeshadow color palette that echoes the eye color, along with some highlights and glitters. Combined with well-placed false eyelashes, it made the gaze look more innocent yet deep, which is the core expression of this character. Actually, this kind of dreamlike makeup shouldn't be too heavy; otherwise, it would mask the lightweight feel of the wig and costume. A perfect balance needs to be found between brightness and softness.
Many people might think that pink-themed characters are easy to carry off, but when it actually comes to shooting in a real set, you also need to consider the coordination of skin tone and hair color. I tried out the makeup about twice before the shoot, adjusting the shade of the foundation to ensure that under the combination of the pink wig and light blue contact lenses, the face wouldn't look muddy. Although the whole process was tedious, the preparation work must be solid to produce great photos.
We completed the full day of shooting basically with this outfit and the photographer. During the process, we tried various camera angles such as sitting, standing, and leaning over the piano keys, and the atmosphere in the final selected photos all turned out great. For me, every time I cosplay a character, it's not just about replicating the look, but also about experiencing the emotions and postures that this character might have within that specific setting. This shoot of Dorothy fulfilled my long-standing wish to shoot dreamlike angel-themed characters, and the outcome made all the prior preparation and hassle completely worth it.
