This shoot capturing the twins Rem and Ram from Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World required extensive dedication during pre-production. For my Rem styling, the ensemble was anchored in pure white and soft pastel blue; tiers of ruffled lace and frills along the collar, sleeves, and hemline looked exceptionally airy before the lens. The blue-and-white parasol in hand was a pivotal prop, embellished across its canopy with intricate eyelet embroidery and satin ribbons—laborious to construct, yet opening it on set made every ounce of effort worthwhile.

The wig was a pastel blue bob cropped neatly along the neck, with blunt fringe and contoured side locks carefully preserved. To reflect Rem's character, reddish eye shadow was blended to align with official designs, finished with the signature pink cross hairclip. My partner's Ram featured short pink hair, while her black-and-red long gown and black Stockings forged an intense visual clash. When paired side-by-side, this chromatic collision between blue-white and black-red yielded breathtaking visual tension.

The studio lighting design was crafted with utmost intention. We opted for cool soft strobes paired with an ambient backdrop of European classical architecture and abundant blue-and-white faux florals, fostering an ethereal, tranquil realm. Sitting upon ornate European chairs or swaying on the swing genuinely felt like stepping into an alternate fantasy world. Posing back-to-back or in seated interactions required continuous refinements of blocking and eyelines. Because both dresses were voluminous, the petticoats and cascading ruffles constantly competed for space on narrow seating, demanding meticulous resets of skirt drapes before every take. In particular, when legs clad in black Stockings crossed with those in white Stockings, ensuring fluid, elegant contours while balancing shadow roll-offs was paramount to capturing rich tactile dimension.

From a styling perspective, Rem's bob demanded a razor-sharp, uniform curve without stray flyaways to convey her crisp maid poise. Conversely, Ram's pink wig, while vibrant, was equally demanding, requiring liberal hairspray to secure its airy lift and directional flow. Ribbons, brooches, and every pleated tier on the skirts were meticulously steamed beforehand to prevent unkempt creasing on camera.

During shooting, I observed the distinct light reflectance across different textiles: white lace and blue satin softened beautifully under cool light, whereas black velvet and red bows absorbed immense illumination, revealing a deep, sumptuous texture. Our lighting balanced dark garment details carefully to prevent crushed shadows. Leaning back-to-back was not just a compositional alignment, but a complementary dialogue of light and shadow. Gazing into the lens, sensing my partner's steady presence and breath behind me made the collaboration seamless. Harmonizing the white and black color palettes on set was an exhilarating challenge, and despite the physical exhaustion, heavy garments, and stuffy wigs, seeing the exquisite light interplay in the final gallery brought immense fulfillment and invaluable experience in directing twin character dynamics.
