Standing by the Yangtze River in this swimsuit in the dead of winter was bone-chillingly cold, but seeing the final photos made it completely worth it.
This shoot came together on short notice. Seeing the Yangtze River night view and the light reflections across the water, it felt exceptionally suited to this character's chilly, aloof aura. Before shooting, the photographer and I discussed the setup at length, deciding to use the bridge lights shimmering across the water as a foreground element. Paired with a low-angle perspective, it nicely elongated the leg lines and gave the overall composition much greater depth.
The shooting process was genuinely hardcore. The wind along the river was fierce, blowing across soaked White stockings and clothing with a piercing, biting chill. To stay faithful to the character, I wore a white one-piece swimsuit paired with over-the-knee White stockings—clothing that offers virtually zero warmth, leaving my toes completely numb the moment I stepped into the water. Despite the bitter cold, to embody the character's signature cool, quiet demeanor, I had to tightly control my facial expressions to ensure no visible shivering gave away the struggle.
The red lance prop was quite heavy, making it physically demanding to hold for extended periods, but the red-and-white contrast against the night was undeniably striking. The photographer applied great technical skill, fine-tuning the aperture and ISO to match the reflective surroundings, transforming background city lights into perfect circular bokeh. Because the water was deep, I had to continuously adjust my stance to keep the reflection intact while keeping the composition centered, stepping carefully each time; the ripples created underfoot became a textured, evocative accent.
I am extremely satisfied with how the photos turned out. The integration between the subject and the environment is seamless; the images feel serene yet carry a chilly, melancholic edge. We avoided excessive post-processing, preserving the authentic water texture and raw lighting, faithfully recording winter's harsh chill alongside a bold visual contrast. The photographer had an incredible grasp of the scene, and I gained valuable professional insights into nighttime reflection photography. The quality and texture of this set are fantastic, and I personally adore this chilling, atmospheric vibe.
