This shoot is the final presentation of my Black Suit Rei Battle suit cosplay version. The difficulty of this outfit lay in balancing the material and the silhouette: the main garment is a form-fitting bodysuit design, which required many adjustments to ensure my poses didn't look stiff. The accompanying over-the-knee Black leather boots had very high heels, making walking difficult, so during shooting, I had to rely on the wall and the scythe to keep my balance. However, this style of boots beautifully elongates the leg lines, looking fantastic on camera. The leather opera gloves on my hands were crafted from the same material, hugging my arms snugly. The large red-and-black scythe prop was also quite hefty, with noticeable inertia when swung, so while posing I had to pay close attention to the tip of the blade to avoid covering my face or accidentally hitting the backdrop. The grey-red paint finish on the scythe had great texture, and together with the long red shaft, it matched the battle suit's palette seamlessly.
The shooting environment was set before a starry sky backdrop I arranged myself; warm yellow string lights paired with blue star curtains created an atmospheric contrast against the cool, austere red-and-black color scheme. During the shoot, the most exhausting pose was the one with one foot propped against the wall—my thigh had to stretch wide while stabilizing my core to capture both leg length and dynamic tension. The pose facing the camera with crossed arms holding the scythe horizontally was also quite demanding on waist strength. During shooting, I also kept an eye on the edges of the transparent mesh, as such materials snag easily and must be handled with great care.
For makeup, to recreate the character's cool detachment, focus was placed on pairing the red eye makeup with the short blue hair, alongside subtle adjustments to the eyeliner contour. Packing and transporting the props was quite a chore, but seeing the finished results made all that hard work feel well worth it. The hand-painted star backdrop and bulbs were arranged by ourselves, which made the captured lighting and shadows much softer. Since this is my all-time favorite character that I've always wanted to cosplay, I referenced many original settings during prep, striving to recreate the functional, tactical feel of the battle suit. When trying on the costume, the tight black leather parts weren't very breathable, so going through the whole shoot was indeed tiring, but seeing the results in the camera made me truly happy. If given the chance later, I might try shooting outdoors, which would probably bring a completely different style. In summary, this shoot not only fulfilled my cosplay wish, but also helped improve my photography and posing skills, enabling me to better manage the balance between special fabrics, light, and shadow.
