[Rei Ayanami Cosplay] Neon Genesis Evangelion: The Urban Daily Life of Blue Hair and Red Eyes

Taking this set of photos actually took nearly three weeks from confirming the look to the final cut, because there were quite a lot of details in the props and accessories. Especially that giant grey rabbit plushie; the X-shaped eye stitching looks simple, but to keep its fluffy yet non-collapsing texture, I stuffed it with enough filling cotton, and also had to fix the red leather belt and metal eyelets to ensure it wouldn't shake around when worn on my back. The wig chosen was a light blue short style with relatively wispy ends so that it could have naturally flowing layers when blown by the wind. The hair clips and the small red circular piece on top were also adjusted repeatedly for angles to avoid looking stiff.

The weather on the shooting day was fantastic. The outdoor light with blue skies and white clouds was very translucent, allowing us to capture a cold elegance without needing any extra fill lights. The grey vest on the upper body featured a Chinese-style frog closure design on the front, but it wasn't completely retro; paired with a light blue neckerchief at the collar and black beads, it beautifully balanced techwear style with a youthful maiden vibe. For the lower body, the blue denim shorts had white lace added to the edges—to be honest, this detail added a bit of softness to the shorts, while the bright orange belt and white leg loops enhanced the visual division lines, giving the overall styling more tension. The white faux fur on the cuffs of the jacket was sewn on by myself; semi-draped over my arms during the shoot, it could both add volume and echo the rabbit's color.

It was actually quite exhausting during the shooting process, as I had to support that giant rabbit with one hand while keeping my posture natural, and use the other hand to hold onto the slipping jacket. The photographer reminded me to focus on expression management—not too serious, but with a bit of composure and casualness. Wearing the red eyes contact lenses for over four hours made my eyes a bit dry, but to recreate that pop of bright color amid the cool tones, I just endured it. This time I tried several different standings, including looking back, pulling the jacket from the side, and looking down at the camera. In the end, no fancy post-processing was done to the final cut; the original daylight texture was preserved, with only slight adjustments to the color temperature to make it lean toward a cooler white, which made the contrast between the blue hair and red eyes more prominent.

Regarding the character accuracy of this outfit, I didn't completely copy a fixed scene from the original work, but instead did some fan-art-oriented daily life interpretation—converting the rigid lines of the original plugsuit into an outfit more suitable for urban streets, such as removing some heavy armor while retaining the iconic color scheme and rabbit elements, so that it wouldn't feel too out of place while being instantly recognizable. There were occasional passersby around during the shoot, and some even stopped to ask if we were filming a sci-fi drama, which was quite fun.

When sorting through the photos afterward, I found that many accidentally captured moments were actually more natural, like the wind blowing the hair ends onto my face, or the arc of the rabbit hanging down due to gravity. These small details gave the entire set of images a sense of reality. In fact, what I enjoy most about cosplay is this process from preparation to creation, immersing oneself into a favorite character, and then conveying her emotions in this time and space through the lens. I hope this set of photos can make everyone feel a gentle strength wrapped in serenity.
