This set of Asuka x Rei photos shot on the water just caught the tail end of May 20 and 21. To match the theme of this photo set, we spent considerable time on styling and makeup. For Rei Ayanami, the key lay in the flow of the blue short hair and the ethereal feel brought by her crimson pupils; for Asuka, the reddish-brown long twintails enhanced overall dynamism, with the red hair clips on the sides as the finishing touch. The costume was the classic white shirt paired with a red bow tie and blue pinafore dress; in selecting fabric, I compared options and chose a slightly stiffer material so that it would show clean folds during the embrace while better accentuating the characters' traits. The weather on the shooting day was fantastic, and we chose to shoot by the water. The reflection on the water was very intense; to complement this setting, photographer 'Banxing' used the blue light from the water as the dominant tone, combining it with pinkish-purple gradients on both sides to create a visual with strong warm-and-cool contrast. In terms of actual lighting setup, we mainly utilized ambient light and a diffuser panel to soften harsh glares, making shadows gentler and thereby better showcasing facial eye makeup details. Shooting by the water posed certain challenges, especially in controlling water ripples and character reflections, requiring both of us to achieve precise positioning. In terms of posture, Asuka and I (Rei Ayanami) adopted an embracing pose, yet to preserve the quiet detachment unique to the characters, we minimized facial expression shifts, maintaining a calm gaze looking forward. When designing movements, shifting our center of gravity slightly backward formed a stable composition. Hand placement was also carefully considered—whether the angle of the bracelet on the wrist or the interlocking posture of our hands, everything was adjusted multiple times to ensure a natural and sophisticated visual. As a partner, 'LanmaoGengxinLa' communicated seamlessly during the shoot, reaching tacit understanding with barely any words needed. Because this outfit is meant for summer, shooting by the water for an extended time grew a bit chilly, but everyone maintained great form. In the post-processing stage, we enhanced the streaked reflection texture on the water's surface, giving the characters richer depth within the cool environment. Though the shooting process was demanding, looking through these photos conveys that unique texture of interwoven oppression and hope from Neon Genesis Evangelion. This set of cosplay works serves as a tribute to this timeless masterpiece. The profound blue of the water, the embracing pose between the two, and the contrast of red and blue hair formed the core visual language of this shoot. This experience was also an invaluable photographic exchange for me. Shooting by the water has noticeable constraints—for example, ripples easily disrupt reflection stability when the wind picks up, so we deliberately waited for calmer moments. Additionally, keeping the background concise was essential; using rocks at the edges as foreground helped deepen spatial depth. While selecting the final returned photos, we comprehensively evaluated multiple compositions and focal points of gazes, ultimately settling on these two. Overall, it was a tacitly coordinated creation. Through this shoot, I also gained insights into still-life-like portraiture techniques—how to weave the subjects' body language seamlessly into the natural backdrop. Although the shoot was physically demanding, conveying this sense of serene tranquility through the frame made it deeply meaningful.
