[Suzuka Gozen cosplay] Recreating the Power of the Ruler of Mount Suzuka: My Favorite Hero

Speaking of that moment back then when she shielded me in her arms, that was the primary catalyst for deciding I had to cosplay my ultimate favorite character myself and deliver a stunning photo set. Coinciding with the 10th anniversary of Onmyoji, I felt compelled to turn in a result I could be truly proud of. Prepping the costume, makeup, and props was an extensive undertaking. From fabric selection to custom accessories, to capture that majestic yet gentle Japanese style aesthetic, I specifically chose red hakama pants with great drape and a crisp white top; this bold red-and-white color contrast puts lighting and fabric textures to the test. The antler headdress was entirely handmade and quite heavy; to keep it from slipping, numerous bobby pins were concealed within the wig.

On the day of the shoot, my photographer chose a deeply atmospheric indoor set featuring a red-walled corridor and a gold-traced crane folding screen. Such backdrops absorb a lot of light, but relying on a single key light paired with subtle ambient illumination, the photographer brought out maximum three-dimensional presence in the character. The wooden tachi in my hands was a custom-made prop; to capture that close-up shot with the blade drawn horizontally across my face, I fine-tuned my posture for a long time until my gaze locked onto the lens, truly channeling the commanding presence and mystique of the ruler of Mount Suzuka in true 2D flair. Additionally, managing the long tail was quite tricky—it easily caused trips while walking, and posing required careful angular adjustments. Yet it is precisely these details that construct the character's soul. Throughout the Cosplay photography session, we explored compositions from various angles: half-body close-ups highlighting the gaze and the battle-worn texture of the shimenawa across the chest, as well as full-body frames showing off the sweeping hakama and the imposing antlers.

In reality, the most demanding aspect of this styling was the headgear details. Balancing the black headwear and golden antler rig required extreme care whenever tilting or lifting my head to keep the hair texture from getting disheveled. Clear communication during shooting was even more critical for dynamic shots. During pre-shoot planning, I conceptualized her as a lord who embodies both ruthless decisiveness and an all-embracing grace. Consequently, I invested extensive effort practicing my gaze, constantly seeking that slightly upturned, confident stare even when standing perfectly still. For the half-body portraits, holding my arm steadily across my chest formed a composition that interlaced defense with authority, projecting an aura of effortless command. For full-body frames, standing tall and straight was necessary to properly carry the red-and-black battle attire alongside the hefty shimenawa waist cord. I am deeply grateful to the friends who assisted with fine details—from the folds of the skirt pants to the natural drape of the red cord on the chest, every element aimed to mirror the character's authentic splendor. The photos you see here were meticulously polished, with every frame capturing my personal interpretation of the character. Portraying my favorite hero left me with zero regrets. Though far from comfortable and lightweight everyday wear, standing before the crimson wall clad in this heavy, ornate gear filled me with a distinct, empowering energy.
