Tonight's night patrol mission for the Lungmen Guard Department was handled by my partner and me. Having chosen this duo, we had to fully master the atmospheric tension of tactical operations. Every time I put on this gear, I can't help but admire the intricate operator designs in Arknights—harness straps, buckles, and structured inner linings all combine into something far beyond simple layered fabrics. The predominantly black color scheme not only offers exceptional concealment in tactical situations, but also yields striking visual impact in night Cosplay photography, catching those cyan-blue neon reflections perfectly.
I was responsible for the Ch'en cosplay look this time, featuring long, straight dark blue hair and black horn accessories at the crown that required firm anchoring at the roots to prevent slipping during larger movements. My partner took on Hoshiguma, whose striking long green hair and single-sided horn exuded immense screen presence. We deliberately chose a staggered high-low posture: I leaned casually against the metal railing with one leg slightly bent, resting my hand on the railing for balance, while my partner leaned forward slightly standing to my side-rear. This staging naturally echoed their dynamic—Ch'en's cool exterior with inner warmth alongside Hoshiguma's steady gravitas—communicated through our subtle, downcast eye contact.
Speaking of this Tactical style outfit, the lower-body details were what satisfied me most. The black shorts paired with thigh tactical straps lead down to elongated black gaiters, with eye-catching fluorescent lime-yellow glowing accents lining the boot soles and gaiter edges. When shooting at night, whether struck by the photographer's speedlights or reflecting ambient streetlights, those fluorescent strips emitted a distinctly cyberpunk sci-fi glow. These thick-soled boots not only elongated leg lines visually, but also provided solid stability while standing. My partner's cargo trousers and chunky platform boots followed a similar design philosophy, yielding a very rugged overall silhouette. We scouted several spots along this bustling commercial street in the old district, eventually settling on this curved railing to support body language that looked "ready to draw blades at any moment."
The lighting in these photos was genuinely challenging. Ambient nighttime street lighting is chaotic—warm yellow spotlights beaming from shop signs mixed with the cool white glare of nearby streetlights, which easily distorts facial skin tones. The photographer adjusted the color temperature and used portable studio strobes to cast clean, cool white fill light across our faces, accurately rendering skin textures while preserving the warm, blurred bokeh of distant neon signs. We specifically requested low-angle upward shots to visually enhance our commanding presence, which—coupled with the Lungmen Guard Department's iconic, sharp uniforms—looked exceptionally badass.
To be honest, maintaining expressions and posture throughout the shoot was quite taxing. In the game, Lungmen Guard Department operators are disciplined and stern, so we lowered our brows and adjusted our gaze to appear constantly battle-ready yet composed. The facial makeup was styled toward a sharper, more defined aesthetic, eliminating soft colors to emphasize light-and-shadow contrast. Although the wind occasionally tossed our wigs around, it added dynamic realism akin to being on active duty. We prepared for this photo series for a long time, particularly the tactical buckles and webbing straps along the belts, which were all custom-made by prop makers or modified by hand.
When shooting tactical characters, the most critical detail is crisp sharpness. There can be no bulky, sluggish clutter; the garment silhouette must flatter the body cleanly. While executing these poses, we constantly monitored whether the clothes sagged or developed awkward creases. Even for a simple pose leaning on a railing, engaging the core and straightening the spine was essential. While my partner adjusted her hat, I searched for that point of eye contact, and this subtle coordination captured in an instant became our defining freeze-frame.
Looking past character filters, I believe the true benchmark of high-quality cosplay lies in whether the imagery conveys the character's unique ambiance. The wind was quite strong that night, and walking the streets in full black gear drew plenty of stares from pedestrians, but our intense focus during shooting let us completely ignore external distractions. This collision of bringing 2D characters into 3D reality is precisely the magic of Cosplay photography. Beyond replicating their appearances, we wanted to tell a parallel story belonging to the Lungmen Guard Department through composition, lighting, and expressions.
