This Touhou Project Remilia and Sakuya Izayoi photoshoot took place in a Vintage study. Setting up the scene was a lengthy process; to recreate the ambiance of a moonlit tea party, we sourced a carved dark-wood table, stacked weathered vintage tomes, and arranged an amber retro desk lamp, silver tea service, wax-sealed letters, and an hourglass tucked in the corner.
I portrayed Remilia for this shoot, which featured rich wardrobe details. The pink dress was delicately constructed from the collar lace down to the pleats along the hem. The angle of the large ruffled mob cap was also critical—tilted slightly low to shade the eyes, or angled upward to channel noble haughtiness. Although the crimson bat wings behind me were semi-translucent, reflector angles had to be meticulously tuned to preserve airy translucency without looking flat. The ruby brooch and velvet bow tie served as the visual soul of the look, popping brilliantly against the shadowy backdrop. To embody the character's nuances, I wore White stockings paired with wine-red Mary Jane shoes. Lounging on the sofa couldn't look stiff; it required a languid, doll-like delicacy, so we repeatedly modulated leg placement to ensure the longest, most elegant lines on camera. The white hosiery caught ambient illumination at this angle, demanding careful post-processing along the legs and hosiery to retain a soft sheen without blowing out highlights.
My partner's Sakuya Izayoi cosplay featured a dark blue velvet maid uniform with outstanding texture, revealing subtle luster shifts in ambient light. The layered white lace apron, monochrome headdress, and silver-white short hair fully channeled the capable, detached presence of the Head Maid. Because dark attire easily blends into a shadowy background, we utilized side-rim lighting to outline her silhouette. Her posture was equally exacting: raising the arm high while keeping the silver tray level, or holding the crystal hourglass with a steady wrist. We adjusted hand positions iteratively until achieving clean, natural lines.
The master-servant dynamic between Remilia and Sakuya in canon carries a unique charm—the young mistress's aristocratic poise tinged with childish whimsy, contrasted against the maid's composed, all-embracing grace. During the shoot, I strove to weave these undertones into subtle glances and micro-expressions. Working seamlessly with our photographer, we explored various scenes: sipping tea behind the desk, holding hands on the sofa, serving tea, and capturing casual selfie-style interactions. The photographer cleverly used desk edges and bookshelves as blurred foreground elements, harmonizing with window backlighting to layer the frames with a dreamy, painterly haze. Afternoon light shifted swiftly, so we fine-tuned aperture, shutter speed, and overhead ambient dimming to keep lighting uniform across faces and garments.
Post-processing centered on warm vintage tones and moody shadows, unifying the color palette through curve adjustments and color grading. Shadows leaned subtly cyan while highlights favored warm amber, evoking the evocative texture of an antique photograph. In retouching skin, I preserved natural pore textures and avoided excessive smoothing, letting authentic details enhance the classical Gothic charm. Different smoothing intensities were applied to face, legs, and arms to accentuate the hosiery weave while minimizing bodily warping for an organic look. I also corrected background perspective and harmonized mismatched book tones along the shelves. From set styling to shooting and final grading, every step received utmost devotion, fully realizing the enchanting moonlit atmosphere on screen.
