[Asuka Cosplay] Neon Genesis Evangelion Asuka ballet styling, the pink and white girl on pointe - Image 1

Combining Asuka and ballet elements together was a very special photography experience.

The design of this costume is very exquisite. The upper body is a pink corset with white lace trims and criss-cross straps on the chest, tied with a large pink bow at the waist, while the lower body is a multi-layered fluffy white tulle skirt. To restore that lightweight yet textured effect, the tulle layers of the skirt hem were chosen to be very sheer, showing a subtle pink-and-white gradient under the lights. The shoes worn on the feet are light-colored ballet pointe shoes, with straps needing to be criss-crossed around the ankles. For this set of photos, I specifically practiced standing on pointe and basic hand positions for a period in advance.

The character Asuka herself carries a strong personality and arrogance, while ballet is an art that extremely emphasizes softness and restraint. When searching for the balance point between the two, I designed the postures to be as relaxed and expansive as possible. The arm-lifting action in the photo looks simple, but in reality, it requires the core to be continuously tightened; when standing on both feet, the center of gravity must fall entirely on the pointe, and lifting the arm not only requires maintaining stability but also having an upward extension and elongation feel. The crossed standing posture of the legs also needs control; when pointing the instep, the muscles are tensed, and the entire person must maintain this state of high concentration in front of the lens.

In terms of hairstyle, Asuka's signature orange twin-tails are retained, with the hair ends tied with white plush hair rings, and a compact silver tiara added on top of the head to echo the ballet atmosphere. The makeup heavily emphasizes the clarity of the gaze, paired with a dark blue choker to add a bit of a sharp feel. Because I didn't want the background to steal the overall lines of the character, the photography teacher directly chose a pure gray curtain. This minimalist environment particularly tests physical expressive power, but it also precisely highlights the character herself. The light hits directly from the front, forming a neat shadow around the feet, making the visual focus of the entire frame very concentrated.

Shooting was actually quite difficult. Wearing pointe shoes to maintain a single-leg or crossed tiptoe posture, after a long time, the toes and ankles become sore and swollen, and the instep must be kept tensed to make the lines look good. The tulle skirt of this outfit has a relatively large volume; when turning or adjusting the center of gravity, the amplitude must be controlled so that the skirt hem naturally spreads out instead of flying around randomly. But I must say, the visual effect of Asuka paired with this pink ballet skirt is truly stunning, possessing both the recognizability of an anime character and the tension of classical dance.

When sorting through the photos and seeing the light and shadow hitting the body curves, I felt that all the previous hard work was quite worth it. As long as the limb angles and expressions are on point, even just a frozen moment can convey that unique temperament belonging to Asuka.
