This time, I shot a formal Sankarea: Undying Love cosplay photoshoot. Just catching the peak blooming season of endless summer Hydrangea, I decisively selected a park blooming with hydrangeas as the shooting location. To recreate the character's temperament, I prepared the classic sailor suit ensemble: a white long-sleeved shirt paired with a purple sailor collar and matching pleated skirt, fine stripes along the cuffs, and a bright blue ribbon tied at the chest. This bow was the most vibrant pop of color on the outfit, instantly catching the visual focal point against the lush greenery. On the lower half, I wore over-the-knee Black stockings and dark brown chunky loafers—a combination that visually flatters the leg contours while fitting the aesthetic of Anime-style photography seamlessly.
For makeup, to align with the character design from Sankarea: Undying Love, I wore crimson contact lenses, and the eye makeup was deliberately smoked with reddish-brown gradients to evoke an ethereal, slightly aloof aura. The blunt bangs and face-framing tendrils were neatly trimmed, paired with straight black hair to deliver a crisp, refreshing look. For hair accessories, I solely added a light-blue butterfly hairpin, which served as a wonderful bright accent before the lens.
The weather on the day of the shoot was delightful, with sunlight filtering through tree leaves to create dappled light and shadows. We intentionally chose to shoot between 3:00 and 5:00 PM when the lighting was soft and gentle rather than harsh. To make the subject pop, the photographer opened the aperture wide, utilizing a shallow depth of field to blur the background Hydrangea blooms and foliage, creating distinct visual depth while gracefully excluding other park visitors. During shooting, I held a small silver digital camera and a transparent plastic umbrella. While holding the camera, I pretended to take landscape photos as the photographer took candid captures from the back and side; such effortless, unposed moments often yield the best results. Adding the clear umbrella introduced an airy translucence to the frame, which, combined with the faint glow amidst the flowers, evoked a cool and dreamy ambiance. Additionally, I prepared a blue butterfly prop resting on my fingertips or near my lips, adding dynamic vitality while echoing the hues of the Hydrangea and blue ribbon bow.
Regarding emotional expression, I strove to maintain a calm, slightly melancholic demeanor throughout this set. Rather than forcing smiles, everything was conveyed through gaze and body language. Whether resting my cheek on my hand while sitting on stone steps or crouching in the flower beds, maintaining an elongated, relaxed posture was essential. For example, sitting with crossed legs on the steps helped elongate leg lines, and hand gestures needed to look organic rather than stiff; when amidst the flowers, care was taken not to let leaves obscure too much of the body, allowing the composition to breathe. Walking or turning back offered prime moments to capture the dynamic flutter of the skirt and flowing arcs of long black hair.
Speaking of shooting insights, what flower-field portraiture dreads most is visual clutter. In composition, I encouraged the photographer to leverage foreground elements, such as using blurred Hydrangea blossoms in the front of the lens while placing the subject in the lower center, achieving depth while highlighting the focal character. Another key point was lighting management—avoiding direct sunlight on the face to prevent unflattering harsh shadows, as ambient diffuse light beneath tree shade best flatters natural skin textures. During post-production color grading, I deliberately cooled the color temperature toward a cool-toned cyan-green palette, resonating harmoniously with the Hydrangea and uniform. Although outdoor shooting inevitably involved insect bites and physical exhaustion from squatting and standing, the moment I saw the finished photos, every bit of effort felt thoroughly worthwhile.
