Today's shoot captured this classic look of Marisa from Touhou Project. The outfit is a timeless monochrome palette—a black-and-white witch hat accented with a purple ribbon bow, with golden braids cascading across the chest. The white short-sleeved blouse features ruffled trims layered beneath a black vest adorned with golden buttons and stars. The skirt is primarily black with white lace trimming along the hem, and the apron is likewise embellished with a purple bow and yellow stars. In my hand, I held this wooden-handled broom taller than a person; the broom bristles were crafted from natural dried grass, giving it authentic texture and moderate weight, making holding it for photos genuinely feel like a magician's true craft in this Witch costume.
The shooting venue was chosen inside the atrium of a modern architectural building. The grey tiled floor and the glass curtain wall in the background lent the frame a clean, translucent feel. Downlights from the ceiling provided even overhead illumination, but to keep facial contours crisp and distinct, the photographer added soft frontal fill light. The overall lighting was gentle, perfectly highlighting the fine details of the costume.
In terms of pose design, to reflect the magician's lively persona, I experimented with different stances. In the first shot, standing sideways with my body leaning slightly forward, one hand reached out while the other held the broom behind my back, evoking dynamic motion as if casting a spell. The second shot featured turning around to touch the brim of my hat, adding a playful, mischievous touch. The third shot presented a frontal pose, arms spread wide while holding the broom, accentuating the overall structure of the costume.
Marisa is an iconic character; her vibrant personality and endless curiosity toward magic and the unknown have always deeply attracted me. During the shoot, striking the right balance between expression and pose required staying agile and confident. As the central prop, although holding the broom for a prolonged time made my arms ache, its presence in the frame was unmistakable. While posing, I deliberately regulated my breathing, kept a natural smile, and guided my gaze according to lens placement. Communicating with the photographer was also vital—such as where to angle the broom so it wouldn't obstruct bodily silhouettes, or how high to raise my arms to accentuate the waistline; these nuances were crucial in determining the quality of the final images.
The skirt of this outfit is on the shorter side, paired with white ankle socks and black Mary Jane shoes, which visually elongates leg proportions nicely. While shooting, I adjusted leg stances according to the camera angle to make the overall composition feel breezier and more agile. Although I didn't wear an exaggeratedly tall pointed hat this time, the hat's design itself is already instantly recognizable.
The entire shoot went smoothly, with the natural ambient light and fill lights coordinating harmoniously to capture the costume's authentic colors. The resulting photos fully lived up to my expectations, with both motion and lighting captured on point for this Touhou Project Marisa cosplay.
