[Minami Kotori cosplay] Love Live! Blue and Black Stage Outfit Under the Night Sky - Image 2

This blue-and-black stage outfit of Minami Kotori is one of my most satisfying cosplay stylings recently. For the wig, I specifically chose a golden-yellow shade, trimming the blunt bangs and styling them into her iconic twin-tails topped with blue ribbon bows, striving to capture her signature visual traits to the greatest degree. A lot of thought went into the makeup as well: to harmonize with the nocturnal atmosphere, the base makeup was kept clean, luminous, and translucent; for the eye makeup, I selected subtly shimmering light-colored contact lenses and eyeshadow, which brightened the eyes without looking overly dramatic under harsh lights.

The costume itself is packed with intricate details. The top features a blue-and-white color-blocked design adorned with a yellow emblem on the chest, while a black waist corset with criss-cross laces enhances the layered depth. The bottom skirt consists of multiple tiers, with the outermost layer crafted from sequin-heavy blue and black fabric that catches and refracts fine specks of light whenever an ambient source hits it in the dark. The skirt hem is finished with golden piping, revealing a peek of white ruffles underneath; its shorter cut delivers a delightfully perky and playful look. Particularly worth mentioning are the starry sky stockings chosen this time: transitioning from deep blue to black and scattered with delicate star patterns, they matched the night sky background seamlessly. On my feet were chunky black Mary Jane heels embellished with black fluffy pom-poms around the ankles.

The shooting took place along an urban riverfront. With the cool night breeze steadily blowing, the long hair and blue trailing ribbons fluttered in the wind, requiring constant repositioning to maintain the composition. Photographer @硝苯氮 demonstrated incredible mastery over lighting: using the illuminated skyline across the river as our backdrop, the wide-aperture lens blurred distant buildings into soft, beautiful circular bokeh. Concurrently, a cool-toned blue fill light was directed from the side, harmonizing both the subject and the scene within a crisp, cool nighttime ambiance.

In terms of posing, because the skirt was rather short and the sequined fabric relatively stiff, large dynamic movements would easily distort the drape of the skirt. Therefore, I focused primarily on static, poised poses. The hand gesture in the first photo was designed to complement the ornate elegance of the outfit: turning slightly sideways, I shifted my weight onto one leg while extending the other forward, which elongated the leg silhouette while clearly displaying the patterns of the starry sky stockings. The second photo facing away from the camera is one of my personal favorites: the long blue ribbons trailed down my back, creating a wonderful dialogue with the distant city lights.

The entire shoot lasted nearly two hours. Given the high humidity by the riverside at night, the sequined dress and heavy wig felt slightly warm and stuffy. Yet the moment I stepped before the lens and heard the shutter click, I instantly locked into character. Layering this look was quite intricate—from the undergarments and dress to the stockings and shoes, every piece needed careful grooming to prevent wardrobe slips or messy lines in front of the camera. The final night photos achieved exactly what I had envisioned: marrying blue and black tones with the city's neon lights, capturing both an anime dreamscape and authentic night photography texture.
