[Houraisan Kaguya Cosplay] Moon Princess in the Dark Night: A Touhou Project Presentation

Interwoven with dark dead branches and red threads, this Touhou Project Houraisan Kaguya cosplay look is complete. For this shoot, I chose a very cool and eerie environment, building a small, mysterious scene with dead wood and red ropes. My main goal was to highlight the character's cold, detached, yet beautifully tragic and melancholic qualities.

For this outfit, when I first got the wig and costume, I pondered how to convey Princess Kaguya's demeanor through light, shadow, and body language without relying on overly elaborate backdrops. The long straight black wig in this photo has a very silky texture. To capture a windblown, flowing movement, I repeatedly adjusted the hair direction and fan positioning during the shoot. For makeup, I intentionally whitened the foundation, paired with pinkish-purple eyeshadow and dark lips to diminish facial blood color, adding a porcelain doll-like translucency and fragility. This, matched with a subtle red blush in the eye makeup, echoed the hanging red flowers and red strings in the scene nicely.

The outfit's detailed craftsmanship was another focus of this photoshoot. Based on the actual garment, the light-colored wide-sleeved robe features a layered design with inner lining and outer cover. The pleats at the cuffs and spliced lightweight tulle fabric give it a beautiful drape during movement, while the glossy fabric displays a gorgeous color gradient under dual-color fill lighting of red light and cool white light. Although the pearl and beaded accessories on the clothing edges are small, they serve as excellent visual accents against the vast dark background. Especially when light hits the collar and cuff edges, the texture with metallic luster and delicate threads truly stands out.

When shooting, I originally aimed for a more static atmosphere, but while posing, I realized that using wind to create dynamic hair movement paired with a slightly lazy and casual posture actually fit the character's calm emotion in a dark setting much better. The small prop held in hand served as a visual fulcrum, drawing attention to hand details and helping focus the eyes. When adjusting angles, I specifically chose a half-body composition, which allowed me to showcase the upper body costume structure while incorporating environmental elements like hair strands, red ropes, and flowers into the frame.

The red lines were particularly striking in the composition, acting like a form of constraint or tangled bonds. Through fine-tuning the red saturation and contrast in post-production, this visual conflict was reinforced. I believe this expressive color palette is key to capturing Houraisan Kaguya's character traits. The staggered arrangement of dead branches paired with cool-toned shadows captures the overall emotional vibe in a limbo that belongs both to Gensokyo and a touch of reality. Throughout the shoot, I connected my phone to the camera to monitor feedback, adjusting every detail from a single hair strand to the overall light ratio, striving to present a visual result closest to my expectations. The final chosen image satisfied me in both composition and expression, where the overall atmospheric photography and character interpretation achieved the original goal of this cosplay.
