The lighting conditions inside the venue on the day of Manqiu Anime Convention were ideal, especially in the outer area where natural light penetrated the glass curtain walls to create fantastic Backlit photography effects. These Convention photos were captured at a spot scouted on-site by the photographer, utilizing highlights to sculpt clean contours. Because Remilia's outfit features abundant lace and pleated skirt ruffles, backlighting allowed the textures of these fabrics to appear richly dimensional and layered.
Speaking of this styling, to faithfully recreate the character's temperament, I selected a pale blue-purple wig, locking in the curls with styling spray for a long time. Considering the convention crowds and heat, I applied a long-lasting, matte base makeup paired with distinct double eyelid tape and heterochromia contact lenses, which suited the camera look nicely. However, on-site Backlit photography poses considerable challenges, mainly involving two hurdles: first, intense backlighting can easily leave the face underexposed, requiring the photographer to position reflectors nearby or use subtle on-camera speedlight fill; second, when the parasol held overhead blocks the light source, it easily casts harsh shadows across the face.
The photographer handled this set exceptionally well, precisely seizing the exact moment light filtered through the lace gaps to cast a soft halo around the edges of my hair. The dress and red ribbons possessed rich texture in the dim light, while the black streamers created striking linear silhouettes under the backlight. The convention venue was bustling with crowds, making finding clear gaps for framing much harder than anticipated; we had to avoid background crowds and bright neon signage to keep the backdrop clean, leaving only dark tones and soft bokeh. This outfit is quite heavy and the petticoat is voluminous, making walking around somewhat cumbersome, but the visual outcome was certainly worth all the effort of the day.
In post-processing, basic color grading was applied specifically for the backlighting—deepening the background shadows, slightly boosting highlight contrast, and preserving the floating dust motes in the air. I love taking this style of photos at conventions; having suitable weather and an aligned photographer truly brings delightful surprises, and the outcome of these Convention photos left me very satisfied.
