[Houraisan Kaguya Cosplay] The Night Cherry Blossoms at the Junction of Eternity and the Instantaneous

This set of cosplay photos of Houraisan Kaguya, the sinner of eternity and the instantaneous, is finally finished. The shoot was set under night cherry blossoms with heavy branches, and doing an outdoor night cherry blossom photography session with a lighting setup truly takes some energy, but seeing the final result makes it all worth it.

Let's talk about the costume accuracy first. This outfit features a base of a pink lace Japanese-style top with exquisite bows and multi-layer lace patchwork at the collar. The sleeves are designed as extremely wide bell sleeves, with off-white lace borders layered over one another to give a strong sense of silhouette. The lower half is a vibrant red skirt with white ruffles, and the most eye-catching detail is the golden bamboo leaf pattern embroidery on the red skirt surface. I absolutely adore this detail; it carries the weight of traditional Touhou Project attire while blending the sweetness of Western Lolita. The white corset at the waist nicely flatters the proportions, making the silhouette appear quite upright. The headpiece features a light pink silk cherry blossom, paired with my native straight long black hair. This wig was well smoothed out, with the bangs trimmed just over the eyebrows to match the quiet, gentle impression this character has always given off.

The main prop used during the shoot was this traditional oil-paper umbrella. Its black frame and semi-transparent, halo-glowing canopy reflect light beautifully at night, forming an excellent visual focal point. Additionally, that small branch adorned with colorful small round balls was something we added temporarily as a foreground accent, blurred in the last photo to enrich the layers of the frame.

The night scenery environment was crucial for this shoot. The pitch-black night in the background formed a sharp contrast with the bright pink cherry blossoms. This dark background compression made the pink petals look as if they were glowing. For the lighting, we used high-brightness LED lights from the model's back-overhead and side positions for fill light, so you can see a very distinct white halo in the photos. This intense backlighting cast a rim light border along the edges of the hair, lace, and even the canopy, effectively stripping the figure away from the night cherry blossom background and creating an incredibly powerful sense of three-dimensionality.

When shooting Houraisan Kaguya, I always unconsciously associate her with that hidden complexity beneath the tranquility of being the "sinner of eternity and the instantaneous." Although this character frequently has different fan-made creations and meme interpretations, I've always found her noble, composed, yet slightly detached temperament highly fascinating, so I opted for a gentle, quiet emotional expression this time. For the makeup, I specifically chose a pair of reddish contact lenses, slightly elongating and upturning the eyeliner, which, paired with pink-purple eyeshadow, gives the gaze more storytelling depth, delivering a charming yet mysterious feeling under the lens. The lipstick choice was a reddish lip glaze; under the intense night lights, the lips' glossiness forms a prominent contrast with the clean, fair base makeup, making the overall look exceptionally clean and translucent.

Some of these photos selected high-angle and low-angle perspectives, where the structure of the umbrella creates tension, giving a sense of visual extension. However, due to limited lighting conditions at night, it highly tests the photographer's skills—requiring them to balance the light ratio to prevent overexposure while ensuring the clarity of both the background cherry blossoms and the figure. The photographer provided massive support in light and shadow control, especially when capturing the fleeting moments of closing my eyes to gently touch a flower branch or interacting with the lens while holding the umbrella. The movements look natural and not rigid, and that casualness perfectly matches the atmosphere this look aims to express.

The joy of doing Anime cosplay often lies not just in putting on the clothes, but in combining the details of the costume, makeup, props, and environmental elements with the character's core essence, shooting works that possess an artistic touch and stay close to the character's temperament. Although this attempt under the night cherry blossoms took a lot of early preparation, seeing the pink petals and red skirt reflect each other beautifully under the night lights to present such texture and dreamlike effects brings the accuracy of this recreation to a highly satisfying state. I hope future shoots can explore a completely different side of this character in varied environments.
