Every time I do a Touhou cosplay, I am amazed by the sheer richness of the hair, makeup, and props; this time, I chose Patchouli Knowledge cosplay. To fit the library witch setting, I specifically chose an indoor studio with vintage wooden bookshelves for shooting. The purple wig was custom-made, tinted with a translucent lavender hue that, paired with purple contacts, gave the eyes an ethereal, otherworldly dreaminess. The headpiece was the most challenging part of this look: the massive lace bonnet had wire sewn inside for structural shaping, featuring gradient lace on the outer layer, a light pink butterfly print on the base fabric, and a golden crescent moon ornament in the very front, giving it a rich and substantial presence. The outfit was likewise an assembly of lace and tulle—sheer white fabric with subtle purple butterfly jacquard patterns, paired with pink ties and a delicate choker on the chest, perfectly capturing the essence of the magician character in this Lolita cosplay aesthetic.
The grimoire held in my arms was handmade and remodeled, bound in red velvet cloth with pink lace and white pearls intricately fastened along the edges; I spent an entire evening arranging the pearls just to recreate the gorgeous, ancient beauty of the original design. The overall makeup emphasized innocent eyes—applying three layers of false eyelashes with slightly downturned outer corners, topped with glossy jelly lip tint to evoke the delicate charm of a doll from a fairy tale picture book. The first two photos showcase calm, slightly endearing expressions toward the camera, focusing on costume details and theme. The third photo deliberately shifted to a close-up, adjusting the neckline to reveal the collarbone and chest ribbons, subtly bringing out the hidden, lazy allure within the character design.
Reflector angles were meticulously handled during shooting; since the purple wig easily absorbs light, extra fill light was needed along the cheeks and hair ends to give the hair a luminous sheen and make the skin appear more translucent. Because the studio was rather dark that day, I had a friend hold a side-rim light to capture the texture of the book spines on the shelves, which produced very satisfying results. Especially during selection, the final close-up ended up being the most eye-catching. Post-processing primarily unified the color palette while preserving shadow details, creating a striking contrast between the vintage books in the background and the exquisite lace in the foreground.
The entire process from prep to final shots took about a week; participating in the Touhou community campaign meant extra-high standards for detail. Pairing this vintage dress with a classical library setting creates truly photogenic results; anyone who loves vintage aesthetics can try setting up a shoot like this—especially regarding lighting, where only patience and care can capture the character's essence. Outfits brimming with lace and tulle look fantastic on camera, creating wonderful translucency when illuminated. To convey the character's delicate softness, I used thin steel hoops at the cuffs to support the tulle layers, naturally forming an umbrella-like arc when raising my arms. Additionally, I had the hairstylist loosen the wig into voluminous waves, which better framed the face in post-editing. To support this lace bonnet, I tailored the wig base and used elongated wig pads for anti-slip grip, ensuring the bonnet wouldn't fall no matter how much I tilted my head. The golden crescent on the hat was cast from resin with smoothly polished edges to yield clean highlight reflections on camera. Furthermore, to suit the visual needs of the post, I specifically graded the photos with warmer vintage tones, deepening the ambiance of an ancient library.
